OEA / WATER PLANNING / NONPOINT SOURCE AND AQUIFER PROTECTION

This position is in the Nonpoint Source and Aquifer Protection section of the Water Planning Division within the Office of Environmental Assessment. This position is domiciled in East Baton Rouge Parish.

The incumbent of this Geologist position will 1) use GPS and GIS applications to collect and report information on public water wells and potential sources of contamination; 2) Collect water well samples and use the resulting data for analysis of the State’s ground water; 3) Work with the public, local governing bodies and other agencies, using geologic knowledge, to protect public water sources.

As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as a Geologist 1, 2 or 3 depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant. The maximum salary for the Geologist 3 is $96,262. Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A baccalaureate degree with a major in geology, geosciences, earth and environmental science, geophysics, or geological engineering.

NOTE:
Any college hours or degree must be from a school accredited by one of the following regional accrediting bodies: the Middle States Commission on Higher Education; the New England Commission of Higher Education; the Higher Learning Commission; the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities; the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

Job Concepts
Function of Work:
To perform routine and non-controversial geological evaluations concerning the identification, investigation, exploration, development, protection, and/or regulations of the state's natural resources.

Level of Work:
Entry.

Supervision Received:
Close from a Geologist Supervisor.

Supervision Exercised:
None; however, functional supervision may be exercised over lower level employees on a project basis (classified, unclassified and contractual).

Location of Work:
Department of Natural Resources; Department of Environmental Quality.

Job Distinctions:
Differs from a Geologist 2 by the presence of entry-level tasks performance and receiving formal on-the-job training.

Examples of Work
Compiles and evaluates technical data (e.g., structure and isopach maps, cross-sections, base maps, well core data, production data, geophysical data, remote sensing imagery, hydrological maps, drilling activity reports, computer hydrology models, etc.) for geologic projects that are routine and non-controversial in nature such as statewide field investigations of reservoir potential, values of hydrocarbon and mineral deposits, coastal erosion and land loss, lignite deposits, waste disposal, floodplain hazards, and aquifer identification and characterization.

Prepares surface and subsurface maps of varying diversity and complexity on surface and subsurface strata, aquifers, coal and lignite seams, and other geological evaluations (e.g., fault plane maps, structure maps, facies maps, isopach maps and geological cross-sections).

Conducts preliminary evaluations and reviews of geological and technical data that are complex, but not controversial, utilized in monitoring statewide activity regarding mineral resources, injection wells, surface mining, oil and gas wells, coastal projects, water resources, and waste disposal.

Compiles and maintains data and information necessary to monitor and regulate industries related to geology (e.g., petroleum, surface mining, coastal/marine, resource assessment, and hydrological/environmental) and prepares recommendations for review to supervisor geologists.

Makes preliminary reviews of injection, surface mining, oil and gas, coastal use, waste disposal, and water resources permit applications and notifies superiors when deficiencies are detected.

Initiates corrective action by preparing interagency staff recommendations for final action by supervisory geologists. Manages the paperwork required to maintain a continuous surveillance of all wells (e.g., lignite, injection, oil an gas, and water resources) and development activities within a particular geographical area.

Reviews permit applications, completion reports, multiple completion reports, and examines and assigns development data to the proper field(s) within the geographical districts.

Disseminates geological data, agency activities, findings and recommendations to the general public, industry representatives, and other federal, state, and parish agencies.

Participates in fieldwork pertaining to all aspects of geology (e.g., petroleum, surface mining, coastal/marine, resource assessment, and/or hydrological/environmental) and assumes additional responsibilities as deemed necessary.
