Laboratory Assistant (12 Month Term)

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Lab Assistant that can oversees the successful operation of facility, laboratory and business functions through interaction with internal team members and customers as well as external service providers.  The incumbent in this role, accomplishes goals through direct leadership of a team of experienced professionals who have authority to make daily decisions that impact their own work assignments.  The individual manages multiple projects and ongoing work activities of moderate complexity to ensure on time and within budget completion.  May have authority over a portion of a departmental budget.  The incumbent may recommend modifications to policies or procedures to senior functional management that impact their immediate function or organizational unit.

Responsibilities

• Provide laboratory services to all biology and chemistry team researchers including daily media, buffer prep and periodic vacuum trap waste disposal. Work with EH&S to manage laboratory and animal facility bio and hazard waste.
• Maintain and support general cleanliness of laboratories, manage, and maintain glass wash facility and autoclaves. Maintain laboratory chemical inventory management database ensuring inventory and regulatory reporting accuracy.  Dispose of unused/expired chemicals, interact with waste disposal vendor
• Maintain supplies of, and stock, laboratories with commonly used supplies (tips, centrifuge tubes, flasks, cell culture flasks, serological pipettes, etc) Work with facilities on laboratory needs such as electrical, reconfiguration, equipment moves and data drops.
• Maintain relationship with primary vendors for ordering lab supplies and support.
• Incubator daily servicing. PM (preventative maintenance) and decontaminations.  Manage and maintain gas supply for all labs
• Safety walk-throughs of the laboratories to inspect the laboratories and encourage an overall safe working environment. Suggest improvements in the laboratories, where appropriate.
• Maintain biosafety cabinet PMs and decontamination management
• Manage lab equipment asset database, including tracking, servicing and recordkeeping
• Collaborate with inventory coordinator for ordering ad hoc supplies to support research. Maintain pipette inventory, service, repair and calibration 
• Be available to all researchers to answer questions and find answers through research, or web searchers.
• Be on 24-hour notification for crucial equipment (all incubators, deli boxes, refrigerators, -20 freezers, -80 freezers). Be part of the team that responds to emergencies involving these same units no matter time of day and day of the week
• Support lab equipment troubleshooting and repair. Collaborate with EH&S to manage lab safety

Requirements

• 1 years of experience in an industry lab setting and 2 years of directly relevant laboratory management experience.
• Strong interdisciplinary personal interaction skills.
• Expertise with Microsoft Office Suite of programs including Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail.
