What are the responsibilities and job description for the Marketing Writer position at Denison University?
Write sharp, compelling, brand-enhancing copy that tells the story of Denison University. The marketing writer will develop promotional pieces, including reports, publications, press releases and web copy, and produce stories for Denison’s websites, social media platforms, and Denison Magazine.
Essential Job Functions
- Craft compelling copy consistent with Denison’s established voice and tone.
- Conduct research and interviews to develop content for email, social media, web, and other copy needs.
- Assist the University Communications team in developing messaging strategies for campaigns across the college. Work with partners to define and shape content needs.
- Proofread and fact-check content for errors and inconsistencies.
- Edit and polish existing content to improve readability and align with SEO best practices. Recommend ways to address gaps in current content.
- Meet deadlines for time-sensitive content, including annual campaigns and Denison Magazine.
- Develop a deep understanding of the Denison story by spending time on campus, attending university events, and meeting with faculty, students, and alumni on an ongoing basis.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, English, journalism, or related field.
- Proven content writing or copywriting experience.
- A portfolio of published writing.

- Superior writing, editing and proofreading skills.
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of AP style.
- Understanding of writing for SEO.
- Ability to juggle several projects and deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and on a team.
- Effective time management skills, a keen eye for detail, and organization.
- Curiosity and creativity – a passion for finding new ways to tell familiar stories.
Preferred
- Prior creative agency, media outlet or higher education experience
- Experience with content management systems such as Drupal and WordPress.
- Experience in emergency/crisis communication situations.
- Experience with written social media content.
