Job Summary

Under minimal supervision, manages a functional section of the Denver Paramedic Division. These functional sections may include the Operations, Education, Administration, Airport Operations, or other area as defined by the Chief Paramedic. Implements work plans based on annual goals and the organization's strategic plan, resolves citizen, operational, and management issues, and achieves goals while ensuring resources are utilized appropriately.

The Assistant Chief Paramedic is responsible for managing one of the functional sections of the Denver Health Paramedic Division. The Assistant Chief Paramedic is distinguished from the Chief Paramedic, and Deputy Chief Paramedic(s) who direct the Paramedic Division at Denver Health Medical Center, including the Operations Section, Education Section, Administration Section, Special Operations Section, Communications Section, Airport Section or other areas as identified by the Chief Paramedic.

Employee is responsible for planning, organizing, allocating resources, ensuring compliance with Procedures and achieving the outcomes of the work unit. Duties performed involve weighing and evaluating complex factors requiring a high degree of judgment, analytical ability, and problem solving.

Essential Functions:

  • Manages a functional section of the Denver Paramedic Division that may include Operations, Education, Administration, Communications, Special Operations or Airport Section or other area as defined by the Chief Paramedic. Responsibility for all functional subunits under the specific section. Oversees second and first level supervisors and other staff members and ensures appropriate scheduling of staff to cover all functional responsibilities. Monitors organizational readiness, performance, and effectiveness Identifies opportunities for growth/expansion and collaborates with management and other stakeholders to achieve improvements. (50%)
  • Contributes to the development and implementation of work plans based on the annual and strategic plans. Recommends and assists in the implementation of goals and objectives. Communicates annual work plans to employees and ensures employees are focused on the work plan and achieving performance standards. Monitors and directs daily operations to ensure policies and procedures are being followed. Ensures goals and objectives are met, services are being provided efficiently and effectively, and takes corrective action when needed. Ensures staff and financial resources are utilized appropriately and shifts resources based on business needs within budget restraints. (25%)
  • Resolves operational and management issues, makes decisions that are inclusive of multiple perspectives and solves underlying problems. Creates and administers work group procedures and recommends and implements process improvements and policies for work group(s). Establishes performance metrics for staff and work area(s). Assists staff to achieve performance standards and identifies opportunities for continual improvement to performance standards. Resolves escalated employee and citizen complaints. Selects, trains, develops, and evaluates subordinate staff. Provides input on hiring, terminations, promotions, and disciplinary actions as required. Participates in the development and monitoring of the division's budget and oversees financial wellbeing by analyzing cost effectiveness. (25%)


Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree required.


Work Experience:

  • 10 years of ALS ambulance experience required.
  • 4-6 years of supervisory experience in emergency services or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.


Licenses:

  • DLR-Colorado Driver's License Class R - DMV - Department of Motor Vehicles required.
  • EMT-P - Paramedic Certification - CDPHE - CO Dept of Public Health & Environment required.

  • Advanced skills in Excel, and data interpretation preferred.

***M-F business hours. Must be available for occasional instances to work other hours to support 24/7 operational needs. In addition, there is a weekly rotating on-call schedule expectation.***
