The Massachusetts Department of Fish & Game works to preserve the state's natural resources and people's right to conservation of those resources, as protected by Article 97 of the Massachusetts Constitution. To carry out this mission, the Department exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife species, plants, and natural communities, as well as the habitats that support them.
MassWildlife is responsible for the conservation of freshwater fish and wildlife in the Commonwealth, including endangered plants and animals. MassWildlife restores, protects, and manages land for wildlife to thrive and for people to enjoy.

The Department of Fish and Game, Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (MassWildlife) is accepting resumes and applications for the position of Seasonal Avian Technician (Contract Position – four months, estimate early June start). The position is assigned to the MassWildlife Headquarters located in Westborough, but the work will be at the Montague Plains Wildlife Management Area.
The seasonal avian technician will perform tasks related to on-going ornithological work being conducted at the Montague Plains Wildlife Management Area. Responsibilities will include mist-netting and banding Eastern Whip-poor-will and other birds, diurnal and nocturnal point counts, habitat sampling, and data entry.
Term of Employment: This is a contract position for no more than 4 months (June – September, 2023). No benefits are included. Hourly rate is $18.00/hr.
Duties: Duties will include, but not be limited to the following:
- Assisting biologists with field sampling and recording field data including point count and mist-netting surveys for birds
- Loading and unloading field sampling equipment.
- Record keeping and data entry
- Performing preventative maintenance on equipment and tools
- Other duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications:
- Completion of a Bachelor of Science in the following areas of study: Biology, Fisheries Science, Wildlife Biology, Natural Resources, Ecology, Zoology
- Basic knowledge of avian and wildlife ecology
- Knowledge and experience with bird identification by sight and sound
- Previous experience conducting avian field surveys
- Basic map and compass skills, ability to use handheld GPS units, experience with GIS applications highly desirable
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Willingness and ability to work long hours outdoors
- Ability to work weekends and evenings
- Ability to work independently and as a team member
- Basic computer skills – Microsoft Office
- Ability to maintain accurate records
- Possess a current drivers license and an acceptable driving record
Remarks: Job will involve significant physical work in all types of weather. Daily working hours will not be the standard 9 am to 5 pm. Job will require working weekends, starting early in the morning or late afternoon and working some evenings/nights.
