Location & Season Duration:
Based out of Salem, OR, these multiple seasonal fulltime positions start April 1, 2024 through October 31, 2024. These positions will perform water temperature surveys in streams and rivers throughout Oregon.
(These are estimated dates. Length of season(s) may be shortened or extended depending on project needs, funding, or factors beyond the project’s control).
What you will do:
The primary responsibility of these positions will be to conduct water temperature field surveys by placing and retrieving water temperature data loggers throughout Oregon. Some of the duties will include:
  • Drive or hike to remote sites to deploy and retrieve thermistors from tributary junctions and presumed cold water patches.
  • Locate sites with a map, compass and global positioning system (GPS).
  • Deploy water temperature thermistors.
  • Describing channel morphology and instream habitat characteristics.
  • Accurately and clearly transcribe field data to appropriate data forms. Complete map work, verify data, and label photos in the office.
  • Hiking into and along streams daily. (Walk 0.75 – 1.5 miles of stream daily 4 days/week), in hot, cold, rainy weather and over rough terrain. Occasional camping or backpacking in remote areas. Working on a two or four person crew.
  • Communicating with the public to gain access to private land and to explain monitoring activities.

Working Conditions:
  • Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor. Position is eligible for overtime. Overnight travel 2-4 days per week is normal during the field season.
  • Position requires long distance travel to study sites and work in remote areas. walking in cold, swift streams, and occasionally in inclement weather. Some work locations may experience climates with higher levels of UV radiation and extremes of temperature (i.e., <0 and > 38 degrees C). Stream fish surveys may require use of 25-40 lb. backpack electrofisher or snorkeling cold swift streams
  • Must be able to work and communicate effectively with ODFW, other government agencies, private timber companies, private landowners, and members of the public.
Requirements/Requested Skills:
Minimum qualifications are not established for this position; however, we are seeking applicants with the following experience or skills. Preference for interviews may be given to candidates with these skills and background:
  • Requires a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to conduct field work under a variety of weather conditions ranging from heat in summer to cold in winter.
  • Experience (e.g., fish sampling, conducting habitat surveys, hydrology, or biological sampling
  • Experience collecting biological samples from fish and accurately recording field data
  • Must be self-motivated, willing to work under a variety of conditions, and responsible for the quality of data collected
  • Anyone who possess or are in pursuit of a Fisheries, hydrology, or Wildlife Science degree or related degree in biological/ecological sciences.
  • Comfortable communicating with team members and the public
  • Must maintain their own schedule, decide how to safely and efficiently access and work in streams and estuary, and collect data following a complex protocol.
  • Must work independently, often in remote areas. Surveyors may be able to contact a field supervisor by phone or email only once per week, and be visited in the field only once every two to three weeks.

Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. Adverse background and/or driving information may disqualify you from further consideration.
