The primary purpose of this position is to perform launch, recovery duties on T-1, T-6, aircraft. Perform aircraft worker duties such as removing, inspecting, cleaning, repairing, adjusting, and installing components and parts, and to assist higher-grade aircraft mechanics in more complex tasks.

Qualifications:

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-8800 - Aircraft Overhaul Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is the Ability To Do the Work of an Aircraft Worker without More than Normal Supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
  1. Knowledge of assigned powered and non-powered aerospace ground equipment and the skill and ability to properly and safely service aircraft.
  2. Knowledge of the T-1, T-6, aircraft makeup, operation, installation, and adjustment of a variety of major aircraft systems, subsystems, and assemblies such as fuel and hydraulic systems, flight control systems, instrumentation systems, engines, landing gear assemblies, airframe, and control surfaces.
  3. Knowledge of supply procedures, the publication order system, and documentation procedures. Ability to maintain and perform in a fast paced high tempo environment under noisy and sometimes very warm conditions and to work and interact with others in a business-like manner.
  4. Aircraft ground handling knowledge to include proper tower-radio operations and procedures; towing characteristics of assigned aircraft including landing gear, safety pins, wing locks, braking systems, and tying down and grounding methods; procedures for safety refueling and defueling aircraft and the ability to safety refuel and de-fuel aircraft.
  5. Knowledge of safety requirements as outlined in applicable standards, regulations, tech orders and other guidelines. Knowledge of tool, equipment, materials accounting, and security procedures.
  6. Ability to follow oral and written instructions, make legible entries on maintenance related documents, use computer terminals to maintain records and document actions, and effectively communicate orally and legibly in writing.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Heavy lifting (40 pounds). Moderate carrying (15-44 lbs) Hours of straight pulling are 1 hr/day. Hours of pulling hand over hand are 1 hr per day. One hour of pushing per day. Reaching above shoulder. Use of fingers. Both hands required. Five hours walking per day. Five hours standing per day. Three hours crawling per day. Three hours kneeling per day. Three hours repeated bending per day. Three hours of climbing, leg only, per day. Climbing, use of arms and legs. Both legs required. Operation of truck, tractor, or motor vehicle. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Near vision correctable to 13 inches to 26 inches to Jaeger 1-to 4. Specific vision requirement: Cannot be color blind to colors used for runway operations (R, W, D). Both eyes required. Depth perception. Ability to distinguish basic colors. Ability to distinguish shades of colors. Hearing aid permitted. Annual hearing test. If it cannot be otherwise accommodated, a specific physical condition or impairment will not automatically disqualify a candidate.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed outdoors, in/on parked aircraft, in hanger areas, and sometimes in hazardous noise areas: Exposed to extremes in heat, cold, and inclement weather. Must work in confined areas and in awkward positions. Exposed to dirt, grease, and aircraft fluids, oil, hydraulic fluid, solvents, and hazardous fluids and gases such as Hydrazine and Halon. Subject to cuts, bruises, muscle strain and injury from falls off scaffolds, ladders, and aircraft surfaces. May be exposed to intake suction and hot exhaust blast. Works closely with others and alone.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Responsibilities:

- Performs Launch and Recovery functions.

- Removes and installs major components of aircraft structure or systems and performs repairs of limited complexity to control surfaces, fairings, access panels, doors, hatches, landing gear assemblies, engines, activator units, tubing, electrical wiring, and control cables.

- Performs aircraft scheduled and unscheduled aircraft/system inspections (e.g., Phase 1-4, ISO, Major, Minor, hourly post flight (HPO), Preflight, Thru Flight, Basic Post Flight, Time Compliance Technical Order).

- Performs flightline and ground handling operations.

- Utilizes safety practices and procedures and controls tools. Establishes and maintains good working relationships. Accomplishes operational and maintenance record keeping, both manual and automated, associated with aircraft maintenance and repair.
