Teacher Assistant

Qualifications:

• High School Diploma Required
• Associate’s Degree Preferred or,
• Completion of at least two (2) years of study at an institution of higher learning, equal to sixty (60) semester hours or,
• Passing scores (460 or higher) on the ETS Parapro Assessment
• Michigan Test for Teacher Certification – Basic Skills (MTTC), or the ETS Paraprofessional

Assessment:

• Must meet No Child Left Behind (NCLB) requirements
• Working knowledge of District policies and procedures
• Observe and maintain all professional protocol in the classroom
• Classroom management

Position Description: The Teacher Assistant will provide appropriate classroom support and
instruction for each student as directed by the teacher and, according to the guidelines established
by DAAS and the Michigan Department of Education.

Position Responsibilities:

• Record student attendance on a daily basis;
• Assist with student arrival and dismissal;
• Assist the teacher with the implementation of meaningful lesson plans;
• Assist the teacher in addressing the needs of students with specific learning impairments;
• Assist the teacher in related instructional activities (field trips, library, etc.) as directed;
• Assist in physical movement of students from one learning environment to another;
• Assist teacher with maintaining appropriate level of classroom behavior and control, establishing and maintaining a classroom atmosphere conducive to learning;
• Participate in team meetings, in-service training and staff development if and/or when required;
• Under the direction of the classroom teacher, assist students with the development of specific academic skills, project completion, or the management of assigned class work;
• Work with students on an individual or small group basis, as directed by the classroom teacher;
• Supervise students in the lunchroom or during the lunch period;
• Adhere to and maintain all DAAS policies and procedures; and
• Other duties and responsibilities as directed by the classroom Teacher or Building Principal

Physical Requirements: Light Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to
10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects; Frequent standing, stooping, bending,
pushing and pulling.

Terms of Employment: Part-time, 35 hours/week. Salary shall be paid consistent with the District's approved
compensation plan.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated by the School Principal in accordance with
provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
