We focus on educating, equipping, and empowering parents to be champions for their children, effecting change in schools and communities. Our expansive network of parents works to engage parents and other advocates to ensure every child has a champion. DPN is multi-generational, and our advocacy and programming are equity-focused; we help to improve services, programs, and policies that empower ALL children and families. We are committed to elevating parental pathways to literacy and workforce development and supporting the aspirations of their children. DPN is expanding to serve 10 Michigan counties across the state in 2024-2025. We will work with existing and new funders and community organizations to enhance parent engagement, empowerment, advocacy, and training across a spectrum of areas, including health, education from pre-k through to college, career readiness, and workforce development to promote economic mobility.

Role Overview

The Literacy Coordinator will fulfil our vision of providing the support necessary for our children to read at or above their grade level. The Literacy Coordinator will work with the DPN Program manager, to develop an out-of-school literacy program for students in elementary, middle, and high school. This is an ideal position for a candidate with a strong background in literacy and teaching methods and a desire to think innovatively on how to best serve our students’ academic needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead engaging learning activities related to reading and writing for the DPN literacy programs.
  • Establish literacy support teams (partnerships with families) to incorporate literacy in the household.
  • Evaluate students’ progress toward reading at grade level.
  • Coordinate literacy programming with existing children and youth.
  • Identify best practices and opportunities to increase participation in literacy activities.
  • Assist with general administrative duties including data reporting.
  • Previewing, evaluating and maintaining literacy materials.

Qualifications Education/Experience/Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and related experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of quality literacy teaching methods that are culturally competent.
  • Experience developing literacy curriculum for youth and/or families.
  • The ability to establish and implement clear practices for assessing, recording, and reporting on progress toward literacy goals and benchmarks.
  • Experience working with nonprofits and/or community organizations.
  • Interpersonal skills (communication, problem solving, conflict management, collaboration).

Work Schedule

  • Weekdays, with occasional evening commitments.
  • Monday through Friday.
  • Weekend availability required as per project demands.
  • Hybrid work model with 80% onsite and 20% remote.

Pay: $18.00 - $22.00 per hour
