What are the responsibilities and job description for the Broadcast Engineer, Lakeland position at Detroit Tigers?

Job Summary:

The Broadcast Engineer will be responsible for maintenance, support and improvement of audio & video equipment, systems, and infrastructures at Joker Marchant Stadium. These systems include the ballpark sound system, the video production control room, and the equipment necessary to conduct multi-camera live streaming coverage of Lakeland Flying Tigers games.  This person will work with other operations and maintenance staff to ensure that the systems operate efficiently and reliably.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as the Engineer in Charge for both the in-house video production control room and Flying Tigers live streams for home games throughout Detroit Tigers spring training and Flying Tigers baseball seasons.

  • Event day engineering support as needed for non-baseball events at Joker Marchant Stadium.

  • Liaison with broadcast network trucks and interconnect room.

  • Oversight, management and troubleshooting of the ballpark sound system.

  • Manage the implementation and documentation of special projects.

  • Provide guidance on broadcast equipment diagnosis, maintenance, and repair.

  • Resolve equipment malfunction - troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair and/or replace video and audio production equipment.

  • Create and manage preventative maintenance schedules on all broadcast equipment and technologies.

  • Supervise freelance gameday & event production personnel.

  • Provide operational support for other departments.

  • Take part in regular meetings with Detroit Tigers broadcast engineering staff as the lead voice representing the Flying Tigers video operations.

  • Focused support of Daktronics display equipment; professional broadcast production equipment including but not limited to Sony cameras, Birddog PTZ cameras, and Newtek Tricaster switcher.

  • Maintain working inventory of all video and audio production equipment.

  • Develop technical requirements for live video workflows.

  • Assisting in budget planning and state of the art equipment research.

  • Assist with new equipment integration and support network and server technologies including IP routing and switching technology.

  • Provide technical support for televisions, playback systems, and other internal A/V systems as needed throughout Joker Marchant Stadium and associated office space.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in broadcasting roles such as maintenance, operations technician, or similar position.

  • Demonstrated ability in component level troubleshooting, large project conception and implementation and customer focused problem solving.

  • In depth technical knowledge of broadcast technologies and production systems, multimedia hardware, software, and other broadcast systems.

  • Working knowledge of both digital and analog video/audio systems, RF and ENG cameras, field and studio cameras and decks.

  • Knowledge of compliance and regulations applicable to FCC, local, state, and federal laws.

  • The ability to work well under pressure and make quick sound decisions.

  • Must be able to work flexible hours including weekends, holidays, and overnights.

  • Must be able to process large amounts of information, analyze this information and make sound decisions sometimes under intense deadline pressure.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be willing to work in Lakeland and travel as needed for special assignments.

  • Must be willing to submit to a background investigation.

  • Must have unrestricted work authorization to work in the United States.

  • Must be 18 years or older.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

  • Team player.

  • Has the ability to seek simple solutions to complex problems.

  • Skilled in utilizing internal and external resources to accomplish goals.

Working Conditions:

  • Irregular and extended hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Exposure to high noise level.

  • Frequent visual/auditory attention

  • While performing the duties of this job, the colleague is regularly exposed to a facility environment, outside weather conditions, extreme cold/heat, chemicals, electricity, moving mechanical parts, high, precarious places; and fumes or airborne particles.

  • Required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The colleague frequently is required to sit. The colleague is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The colleague must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

  • Requires long periods of time on feet.
