Propagator

The Propagation Department prepares seeds, cuttings, divisions, and grafting.

Essential Functions:

• Seed and cutting collecting at various seasons of the year and at various locations.
• Prepares seeding and/or cuttings.
• Understands the cold stratification process of seeds.
• Mix and apply fertilizer (Dosatron) to the plants that require it.
• Sow seeds (the process of planting).
• Stick cuttings (plant).
• Stock plants to correct location in nursery.
• Strong knowledge of understanding irrigation needs for the different varieties of plants.
• General care for the nursery grounds, keeping the nursery clean, organized, and safe for employees, customers, and vendors.
• General care for nursery stock (plants), ensures plants are watered, handled with care, and are placed in the appropriate location.

Additional Tasks:

• May assist in other nursery departments as needed.
• Duties are subject to change at any time per management’s discretion.

Job Specifications:

Constantly works in outdoor weather conditions on uneven ground surfaces and rainy weather. Must be able to remain in a stationary position (standing/sitting). Extensive walking. Stoop, bending at the waist, twisting, turning, and squatting is required.

Lifting requirements: Up to 10-30 lbs. 80 percent of the time. Up to 40 lbs. 10 percent of the time (team lift techniques when required) The trays get heavier in weight when soil is wet.

Hand movement: Gross grasping for moving plant material.
