Job Description

This position requires a thorough knowledge of law enforcement and jail procedures. This individual is responsible for the operation of all the jail electronic security doors, answering of the inmate intercom and department telephones.

Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of the Jail Sergeant.

Supervision Exercised: None generally.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Duties include the following:

  • Operating security doors.
  • Answering telephone.
  • Maintaining prisoner records, i.e. work release, commitment papers, inmate files, etc.
  • Entry and removal of computer information.
  • Monitor video/camera security system.
  • Check incoming inmate mail and redirect as required.
  • Checks and receives bonds and bond monies.
  • Approves all receipts and releases of prisoners.
  • Handle violent inmates to include physical confrontation.
  • Handle intoxicated and/or prisoners under influence of drugs or other substances.
  • Handle mentally ill prisoners.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned or as apparent.
  • Ability to get along with other employees and the public.

Mandatory Qualifications:

Education/Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Knowledge of the use of computer, typewriter and multi-line telephone desirable. Ability and eligibility to obtain TCOLE Jailer License.

Desired Minimum Qualifications:

Language/Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
