JOB DESCRIPTION

DHA LABORATORY– Laboratory Technician
Reports to: Ellen Hanson CLT (HHS) MLT (ASCP)

Role: Team Member

Descriptive Summary
The Laboratory Technician is responsible for specimen processing, test performance and reporting test results according to procedure with a focus on the entire process: pre-analytical, analytical (testing), and post analytical. This role also troubleshoots, calibrates, and maintains laboratory equipment.

Core Functions
The core functions of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Perform specific gravity testing on urine specimens
  • Receive and process blood and urine specimens for in house and referred out testing
  • Learn techniques and become proficient with a high complexity lab developed manual chemistry procedure
  • Report test results
  • Prepare worksheets
  • Know how to manually calculate a test result when applicable
  • Perform various computer and clerical duties associated the procedures performed
  • Resolve technical problems in accordance with policies and procedures
  • Assure remedial actions is taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications, ensuring that patient test results are not reported until all corrective action have been taken, and the test system is properly functioning
  • Annually evaluate and document performance of all testing personnel
  • Process specimens to include: accepting, rejecting and documentation policies
  • Order laboratory reagents and supplies. Have a working knowledge of reagent stability and storage
  • Disinfecting and cleaning working area and equipment
  • Assist with administrative tasks, as needed.

Key Performance Indicators
Measurable tasks that are essential to success include but are not limited to:

  • Follow the laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results
  • Perform and report proficiency testing. Documentation to include maintaining records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as a patient specimen
  • Adhere to laboratory’s quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedure calibrations and maintenance performed.
  • Follow the laboratory’s established policies and procedure whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance
  • Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results, and either correct the problems or immediately notify the laboratory manager, technical supervisor, or laboratory director
  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications
  • Annually perform competency assessments

Essential knowledge, skills, and education needed perform this job successfully include but are not limited to:

  • Have earned an associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution
  • 2 years of laboratory training or experience in high complexity testing
  • Apply judgement to results to theory; analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Dexterity, detail oriented, multi-tasking
  • Problem solving; identify problems that may affect test performance
  • Ability to follow directions; protocols
  • Communicate professionally, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Computer proficient with accurate data entry skills
  • Able to work with others to complete tasks, and meet goals

  • Days: Wednesday – Friday
  • 20-24 hours per week
