Job Description
The primary goal of this position is to prosecute violations against State and local laws. As the Assistant County Attorney, this position is responsible for working with law enforcement to determine whether there is adequate evidence to file charges against individuals and secondly, working successfully to bring those cases to successful closure in protecting the public safety, health, welfare and interest. This employee must exercise considerable independent judgment. Information handled in this office is of a confidential nature. Job Responsibilities
Comply with all Countywide and departmental policies and procedures.
Prepares and files journal entries; legal documents, letters, invoices, reports, and records, summonses, complaints, motions and subpoenas.
Determines whether adequate evidence exists to prosecute cases for violation of State and local statutes.
Coordinates schedule with the court calendar when setting hearing dates and times.
Codes, prepares, disposes and oversees the management of all case and office files.
Prepares various reports for the County and for the State.
Reviews law journals and other legal publications to identify court decisions pertinent to pending cases.
Conducts legal research.
Conducts trials and other hearings before the court.
Continual contact with other County departments, community meetings and the general public.
Assist the County Attorney in preparation of cases.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EXPERIENCE and/or EDUCATION
~ Graduate from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctorate (JD) required. Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Kansas.

Ability to interpret applicable statutes, regulations and policies and take appropriate action.
Excellent legal writing skills and research aptitude required.
Knowledge of the rules of evidence and court proceedings.
Ability to effectively litigate cases in a court of law.
Ability to manage caseloads so as not to miss deadlines and finding appropriate resources to assist the victim(s).
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing using the English language.
Skills in organization, mathematical processes, time management and a high degree of computer proficiency.
Good interpersonal skills and the ability to interact well with others.
Ability to multi-task and work independently.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Able to make independent decisions, use good judgment, accept results and receive constructive feedback in an appropriate positive manner.
Able and willing to work with others toward achieving common goals.
Demonstrate understanding of the importance of teamwork.
Display positive attitude and support County policies and communicate properly.
Demonstrate initiative in execution of work, comprehend instructions without close supervision and volunteers to assist others, produces the expected volume of work.

Maintain acceptable attendance and arrives and leaves at the prescribed times.
