Job Summary

The Pastoral Associate shares in the responsibility of assessing, planning and implementing continuous and consistent support to the pastor with regards to the parish's ministerial needs, existing and future ministries, and other ministry related tasks. The Pastoral Associate reports to the Parish Business Administrator operates with some latitude for the use of independent judgment and initiative.

Ministerial Character

The Pastor is the visible principle and foundation of unity in the parish SAN JOSE CATHOLIC CHURCH - AUSTIN, TEXAS which the Bishop has entrusted to him. He makes Christ's mission present and enduring in the parish. In order to fulfill his mission, the Pastor employs suitable, chosen collaborators (clerics, religious, or lay people). He shares with them his mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them.

Positions employed at SAN JOSE CATHOLIC CHURCH - AUSTIN, TEXAS help to extend the ministry of the Pastor in particular ways as outlined in the job description. Therefore, the employee in this position is closely connected to and assists the Pastor in the performance of his ministry and thereby engages in ministry for the Church.

Essential Duties

  • As an integral part of your ministry for the Church as carried out in this position, support and uphold the Catholic vision, mission, values, and ministry of the parish in both your professional and personal life.
  • Act as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the way to live out the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Continuously grow in your personal and ministerial identity by participating in religious ceremonies, training sessions, and reflection activities, as directed.
  • Conduct weekly planning/check-in meetings with the Parish Business Administrator.
  • Oversee and coordinate all parish ministries, committees, and organizations.
  • Coordinate annual elections with ministries.
  • Visit parish ministries, committees, and organizations twice a year.
  • Maintain current parish ministries', committees', and organizations' information updated on San Jose's parish website
  • Provide support to parish ministries, committees, and organizations in planning retreats and workshops.
  • Plan and provide quarterly educational workshops and training opportunities for all ministries and parish organizations.
  • Work collaboratively with parish ministries, committees, and organizations to ensure programs and projects are completed within time frames and according to pastor's guidelines.
  • Keep all parish ministries, committees, and organizations informed of parish activities/events monthly.
  • Collate evaluation information and give feedback to all parish ministries, committees, and organizations.
  • Attend Parish Council meetings and serve as a non-voting member.
  • Create, organize, support, and oversee a San Jose Pro-Life ministry.
  • Create, organize, support, and oversee parish wide retreat, workshops, conferences, fairs, as needed.
  • Oversee Pre Baptism Preparation, Quinceañeras' Retreats, Marriage Preparation and Retreats
  • Process documentation for annulment cases.
  • Recruit and prepare facilitators for marriage inventory for couples seeking to marry.
  • Maintain a work schedule that maximizes availability to staff and customers: Sunday mornings and afternoons; Monday to Thursday between 10am and 9pm.
  • Other duties assigned as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the structure and basic teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws and regulations according to the Canon Law of the Catholic Church.
  • Skill in organizing, prioritizing, and utilizing effective time management techniques to carry out multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Skill in effective oral and written communication.
  • Ability to create and foster an environment consistent with the parish mission and goals.
  • Ability to demonstrate success in competencies such as interpersonal influence, innovative thinking, problem solving, conflict resolution, relationship building, and performance leadership.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with all segments of the community (parishes, priests, religious, laity, Catholic ministries, Catholic schools, civic leaders, and community agencies).
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service to parishioners and other visitors to the parish, and ability to work collaboratively.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with others and to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with the Church Community.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Ability to operate various word-processing software, spreadsheets, and database programs.
  • Ability to use effective and legal supervision strategies and techniques with all who are supervised.
  • Ability to proficiently communicate in English and Spanish (conversing, writing, and reading).

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Trainings:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited American college or university or equivalent in a foreign country
  • Master's degree preferred

Experience:

  • Wage-earning experience in management of personnel and volunteers.
  • Experience working within the Catholic community.

Language:

  • English (proficient in conversing, reading, and writing).
  • Bilingual English-Spanish (proficient in conversing, reading, and writing).

Catholic Requirement:

  • Must be a practicing Roman Catholic in good standing.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Valid Texas driver's license.
  • Must maintain compliance with the Diocese of Austin Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) policies through the employment period.

Working Conditions

  • All employees of the parish are engaged in ministry and closely tied to the pastor in the exercise of his ministry and obligations to the church.
  • The parish is an at-will employer.
  • All buildings and vehicles owned by the parish are tobacco-free.
  • Working in a fast-paced environment with priorities and plans that may change rapidly.
  • Working on evenings, weekends, and holidays is required.
  • Will be expected to participate and at times conduct Catholic Christian prayer and liturgical celebrations appropriate to her/his state in life (i.e., lay person).
  • Will be required to adhere to established dress codes and conduct standards.
  • May be required to use personal or parish vehicles to drive to parishes or other off-site locations.
  • Traveling within and outside the parish to meetings and other events may be required, and travel may include overnight lodging.
