SALARY: $22.28 - $45.16 Hourly

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under general supervision of the Fire Marshal, the Fire Inspector performs entry-level work in all
phases of residential and commercial building inspections including enforcing laws relating to
hazardous conditions and state and local fire code violations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Inspects buildings to locate hazardous conditions and fire code violations
0 Tests and inspects installed fire protection systems, fire alarm systems and

automatic fire suppression systems; conducts fire flow tests
0 Conducts inspections of public and some private buildings to identify and correct

situations liable to cause fire, contribute to the spread of fire, interfere with
firefighting operations, endanger life, or in any way violate established fire codes or
ordinances affecting safety

0 Determines proper capacity for places of assembly and conducts night inspections
to ensure the fire and life safety code is met

0 Participates in joint inspections with other city and state agencies
  • Identifies corrective actions necessary to bring properties into compliance with applicable

fire codes, laws, regulations, and standards, and explain these measures to property
owners or their representatives.

0 Conducts fire code compliance follow-ups to ensure that corrective actions have
been taken in cases where violations were found

  • Prepares and issues notices for code violations, conducts follow-up inspections to ensure
corrections have been made and issues permits; issues citations when necessary.
  • Ind-ividu-als ce-rtified- as a licensed peace officer and holding at least a basic fire or

arson certificate. Examines fire and explosion scenes to determine the origin and cause
of fires and explosions, using scientific knowledge of fire and explosive behaviors and
instruments

0 Writes investigative reports and submits cases with all supporting documents for

permanent record and prosecution.

  • Consults with architects, engineers, and contractors to resolve problems and answer any
questions required to ensure compliance with the Fire Code.
  • Plans, develops, and coordinates Fire Prevention and Fire Safety programs for the
community with emphasis on the area of fire safety for the home; coordinates the
development and distribution of brochures and information; develop curricula and
coordinates presentations for Fire Prevention Week and other special activities.
  • Conducts research, analyzes data, compiles information and prepares and presents
reports on inspections, fire investigations and any action taken with respect to fire
prevention.
  • Writes detailed reports of fire inspections performed, fire code violations observed, and
corrective recommendations offered.
  • Reviews plans for new or remodeled buildings in order to ensure the structures meet fire
safety codes.
  • Recommends changes to fire prevention, inspection, and fire code endorsement
procedures
  • Responds to Citizen complaints and conducts appropriate inspection and investigation
necessary to mitigate complaint; Performs follow-up inspections as necessary.
  • Assists in planning and implementation of fire prevention and life safety education
activities within the community such as fire prevention activities, inspections, and
demonstrations
  • Assists other agencies with fire and explosion investigations or other criminal
investigations as directed by the Fire Marshal
  • Maintains a working knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and develops,
recommends, and implements fire policies and procedures in accordance with legal
requirements
  • Must be able to work the allocated hours of the position and be willing to report for duty on
short notice at any hour of the day or night
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Documentary evidence of graduation from an accredited high school or successful
completion of the General Educational Development Test
  • Thirty (30) secondary education hours in Fire Science, Fire Rescue Services, or a related
field.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid Texas Driver License

FIRE INSPECTOR SERIES:

Grade 7 (MIN - $22.28, MID – $26.43, MAX – $30.58) – First level in series.
  • Fire Inspector Basic Certificate in accordance with the Texas Commission on Fire

Protection through Texas Administrative Code 429.203

Grade 8 (MIN - $24.66, MID – $29.29, MAX – $33.92) – Second level in series.
  • Fire Inspector Basic Certification in accordance with the Texas Commission on Fire

Protection through Texas Administrative Code 429.203

AND
• Fire Investigator Basic Certification in accordance with Texas Commission on Fire

Protection through Texas Administrative Code 431.203

Grade 9 (MIN - $25.64, MID – $31.69, MAX – $37.73) – Third level in series. Must have one of
the certifications listed below:

EMT Basic Certification by Texas Department of State Health Services; and
Firefighter Basic Certification in accordance with Texas Commission on Fire Protection
through Texas Administrative Code 423.3

OR
Basic Peace Officer Certification from Texas Commission of Law Enforcement?

AND
Must at least have either one of the below and obtain the second within one (1) year of
employment:

Fire Inspector Basic Certificate in accordance with Texas Commission on Fire Protection
through Texas Administrative Code 429.203

OR
Fire Investigator Basic Certificate in accordance with Texas Commission on Fire
Protection through Texas Administrative Code 431.203
