Description:           The Transportation Router/Dispatcher facilitates an orderly and efficient operation of the Transportation Department and assists the Director of Transportation by providing routing and dispatch services for the District Transportation Department including regular education, special needs and field trip transportation needs.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required
  • Valid AZ Driver’s License
  • Must have Arizona Commercial Driver’s License (Class B)
  • Valid CDL license with School Bus Endorsement
  • Arizona Department of Transportation Bus Drivers Certificate
  • Valid Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Knowledge of bookkeeping and filing systems is required
  • Ability to use transportation software
  • Computer skills, typing 35 word per minute is preferred
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to the transportation of special needs students
  • Knowledge of District policy regarding special needs students and bus transportation
  • Ability to maintain student discipline and safety on the bus
  • Ability to comprehend and perform functions from written and verbal instructions
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills when working/dealing with others
  • Must be an energetic, highly ethical and possess good emotional and physical health
  • Prior school bus driving experience is preferred

 

Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Governing Board or the Superintendent may deem appropriate

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Plan and implement bus routes to service all students (regular and special education) throughout the school year and summer school
  • Implement routing changes to accommodate any boundary changes, growth areas or road changes
  • Open building each morning; check messages/notes to determine needed coverage; check daily field trip requests; check with shop on bus availability; back up Versa Trans
  • Create summer routes as necessary
  • Meet deadlines of student down-loads and route information for both student registration and in preparation for drivers and monitors
  • Work with regular education drivers to keep routes updated and make any changes due to overloads or unsafe route situations
  • Do regular updates to keep student addresses as current as possible (at minimum on weekly basis)
  • Provide dispatch with all information necessary to ensure efficient and effective assignment of drivers and vehicles on a timely basis
  • Schedule early out/late in day transportation for special needs students
  • Ensure special needs students have proper transportation requests on file
  • Ensure all special needs students have an appropriate IEP notation of “transportation”
  • Ensure all MIPS sheets are completed properly and are submitted on time
  • Work with special needs drivers and monitor student referrals with communication between Director of Transportation, school personnel and parent/guardian
  • Process field trip requests into the system (T.O.M.)
  • Determine if quotes are necessary to compare costs
  • Provide field trip estimates for all field trips
  • Maintain accurate and updated information on eligibility and/or desired field trip rotations drivers
  • Maintain driver direction considering safest routing and current road conditions
  • Maintain continuous communication with schools, charter companies and drivers regarding field trips
  • Maintain all District MVD records for anyone who drives district vehicles
  • Ensure all routes, trips and any extra duties are covered with appropriate equipment and personnel
  • On-going radio and telephone coverage
  • Drive on an “as needed” basis
  • Call and schedule substitute drivers as needed
  • Maintain records of mileage, student count, fuel, and service
  • Manage the office in the event the transportation coordinator and secretary are out of the office
  • Complete school bus driver training, including knowledge of state rules and regulations, district policies and rules, a state mandated road test, classroom and refresher training, and first aid and CPR classes
  • Dispatch buses per route assignment
  • Adjust time schedules as assigned, maintaining pick-up and delivery schedules
  • Complete all required forms including but not limited to pre-trip inspections, maintenance requests, field trip forms, mileage logs, student count, and discipline citations in a timely manner
  • Maintain good relations with parents, teachers, and schools
  • Participate in district sponsored professional development workshops/inservices, attend on-going training classes as directed, and read professional publications for continued professional development
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and use appropriate discretion when working with all district personnel and student and family records and/or information
  • Support and follow the rules, regulations and policies set by the School Board and the District
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Governing School Board, the Director of Transportation or his/her designee

 

Length of Employment:

  • Twelve (12) months
  • School calendar will determine the days worked during the school year

 

Reports to:            Transportation Coordinator

 

Evaluation:             Performance to be evaluated in accordance with Governing Board Policy GDO
