SUMMARY:

The Assistant Professor (Adjunct - AAS) position teaches in one of Dorsey College’s Associate of Applied Science degree programs.  They are entrusted with imparting the knowledge and skills each student needs to be successful by providing quality delivery of assigned courses.  Assistant Professors are employed on a term by term basis and for course offerings taught during the day, evening, or online, as well as taught using other distance learning formats.

Assistant Professors are to ensure appropriate action is taken to the satisfaction of the student, Dorsey College, and/or regulatory agencies in compliance with policy, procedures, and legal requirements.  Assistant Professors are to be motivating, fair and impartial, creative, dedicated, and professional.

Assistant Professors teaching distance education courses must be accessible to students via email, phone, Canvas, and Zoom technologies, and must provide their own hardware (PC or Mac Computer) and Internet service.  They must also have some availability during peak times, usually nights and weekends.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver quality classroom instruction based on the approved course outline that addresses all learning modalities to ensure that the needs of individual students in the program are met. 
  • Create an effective, supportive learning environment for students regardless of delivery method.
  • Demonstrate effectiveness with strong outcomes in student retention and student success.   
  • Advise students on attendance, grades, and issues in order to ensure successful completion of their course. 
  • Provide appropriate and timely feedback and grading for all assignments.
  • Maintain student attendance records and grades.
  • Use appropriate resources and technology in the delivery of courses.
  • Maintain professional etiquette in communications with students, staff, faculty, and administrators.
  • Maintain at least 2 hours of regularly scheduled office hours each week.
  • Participate in faculty, staff, committee, and in-service meetings. Attendance at commencement is strongly encouraged. 
  • Become familiar and comply with all college policies.
  • Complete the Dorsey College’s required trainings as assigned.
  • Demonstrate a professional commitment to the college mission and values.
  • Demonstrate professional growth in the subject in which you teach through a combination of several of the following activities: membership and participation educational associations, professional organizations, continuance of education, concurrent related business experience, educational research, and awareness of current practices and standards.
  • Maintain employer relationships by at least annual contacts with employers, one must be a site visit, one may be by phone conversation.
  • Ensure that all educational activity is conducted in a legal and ethical manner. 

KNOWLEDGE – SKILLS – ABILITIES:

  • Excellent communication (written and oral) and analytical skills as well as the ability to work well independently and within a team environment.
  • Proficient computer skills, including on-line technology.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree and at least 15 semester credit hours in subject taught  (SOC courses) with a minimum final grade of “C” in each course.
  • Prior teaching experience is preferred.
  • Prior experience with Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) preferred, but not required.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to see, talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit for extended periods of time; and have sufficient hand, arm and finger dexterity to operate a phone, computer keyboard and other office equipment.
