Job Summary
This is skilled work in performing fire prevention, fire suppression and emergency response activities. Employee performs all duties of a certified firefighter. Emergency and rescue activities are performed with the added credential of a basic emergency medical technician (EMT). This classification has no supervisory responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Responding to various types of emergencies such as fires, accidents, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, and natural catastrophes; driving emergency medical vehicles to the scene of an emergency.
- Administering aid to injured or sick persons; checking vital signs and providing hospital personnel with information concerning the nature of the emergency and the steps necessary to provide immediate medical assistance.
- Immobilizing and transporting injured or sick persons to appropriate medical facility.
- Performing fire rescue and suppression duties which may include: connecting and laying hose lines; entering burning buildings with hose lines to operate nozzles and place streams of water on fires as directed; ventilating burning building; searching and rescuing persons at the scene; raising and climbing ladders; holding nozzles and directing water and chemical streams; and, performing salvage and overhaul operations.
- Serving as a certified EMT in responding to emergency and rescue calls; duties include: driving rescue vehicle to the scene; determining appropriate medical treatment as a first-responder unit; administering care using all medical equipment on truck such as automatic defibrillator, suction unit, etc.; rescuing victims using extrication tools; and, assisting personnel in the care and transportation of patients.
- Inspecting, cleaning, and maintaining equipment, tools, and vehicles; performing preventive maintenance work on vehicles.
- Performing custodial and grounds maintenance work on assigned shift at designated fire station.
- Inspecting and maintaining fire hydrants; duties include checking and measuring water flow and static pressure; clearing area around hydrant for easy access; lubricating and painting hydrants as needed.
- Conducting territory tours to become familiar with residential and commercial areas, new developments, streets and intersections, etc.
- Maintaining an adequate inventory supply aboard emergency medical vehicles through regular checks.
- Participating in in-service training activities, physical fitness exercises, drills, and demonstrations to maintain and update fire/EMS skills and education.
- Attending classes to maintain certification as a Certified Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician.
- Preparing, completing, maintaining, and submitting reports pertaining to shift activities.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or General Educational Development Certificate (GED)
- Successful completion of Basic 101 Firefighter (120 hours) of the Georgia Fire Academy, and meeting all requirements set forth by the Georgia Firefighters Training and Standard Council
- Successful completion of an accredited Basic Emergency Medical Technology program
- Two years professional work experience as a Firefighter
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Must have no felony convictions within the past 10 years.
- Must have the ability to pass a physical examination.
- Must have the ability to pass the minimum physical fitness requirements as set forth by Firefighter Professional Qualification published by the National Fire Protection Association.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
- Possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License (Class B) and a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR).
- Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician by the State of Georgia; maintain certification.
- Certification as a 101 Certified Firefighter 120 by the State of Georgia; maintain certification.
- Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid; maintain certification.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of firefighting, fire ground safety, hydraulics, emergency response, rope and rescue operations.
- Knowledge of state traffic laws for emergency vehicles.
- Knowledge of all fire suppression and emergency response equipment and its placement on vehicles.
- Knowledge of basic emergency medical and life support procedures, techniques, and equipment.
- Knowledge and skill in the treatment, stabilization, and transportation of the sick and injured.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Knowledge of the geography of the County and the ability to become familiar with all County roads and highways.
- Skill in rope rescue utilizing rappelling abilities.
- Skill in using hurst tools to extricate victims from damaged vehicles or other places of entrapment.
- Ability to analyze situations and initiate appropriate course of action.
- Ability to react quickly and calmly while under pressure in emergency situations.
- Ability to prepare and maintain accurate reports and records.
- Ability to safely and effectively operate assigned vehicle.
- Ability to understand and follow detailed oral and written instructions.
- Ability to follow established safety rules and departmental policies and procedures.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County employees and the general public.
- Ability to successfully complete an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course.
Ability to retain valid certification as a Certified Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician on an annual basis.
Salary: $52,865.80 annually, ($ 18.15 hourly) plus full benefits package
