Job description

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is accepting applications for the position of Sheriff's Deputy through our experienced officer/lateral transfer program.

Applicants must be a U.S. or Naturalized Citizen qualified to work in the United States, at least 21 years of age, have no felony or misdemeanor conviction for domestic battery or any offense which forbids he/she from carrying a firearm, must have a high school diploma or equivalent, able to pass a mandatory drug screen. Applicant shall submit a resume with their application.

Applicants applying under the experienced officer/lateral transfer must submit a letter with your application addressed to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office requesting consideration for hire under that program as well as meet the additional qualifications:

  • He/She has one or more consecutive years of experience as a police officer/deputy, with a State, County or Municipal Agency;
  • He/She is currently in good standing with the State, County or Municipal Agency in which the applicant works or has worked;
  • He/She has successfully completed the State of Illinois approved training or a recognized equivalent for the position that he/she is applying for; and
  • He/She is currently certified by the State of Illinois in the position that he/she is applying for or is able to obtain the proper certification without having to attend any academy.

A new employee who is a certified Police Officer in the State of Illinois and has full-time experience from another police department/Sheriff's Office, will earn year for year credit up to 25 years of service. Prior experience will have no effect on the new employee's seniority. The employee shall then proceed through the scale accordingly. Experience is defined as total time served in a law enforcement capacity as a police officer in Illinois, regardless of employers or time between service. New employees are subject to a vacation advance as well.

Duties

A Douglas County Sheriff's Deputy typically do the following:

  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls
  • Patrol assigned areas, observing people and activities
  • Conduct traffic stops
  • Search restricted-access databases for vehicle or other records and warrants
  • Obtain and serve warrants for arrests, searches, and other purposes
  • Arrest people suspected of committing crimes
  • Collect and secure evidence from crime scenes
  • Observe the activities of suspects
  • Write detailed reports and fill out forms
  • Prepare cases for legal proceedings and testify in court
