Overview
We are currently searching for a Biologist to provide support to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This opportunity is a full-time position with MSC and it is on-site in Hamilton, MT.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Conduct standard cloning and recombinant DNA methodologies.
- Grow, genetically manipulate and phenotypically characterize BSL-2 bacterial pathogen Borrelia burgdorferi in compliance with biosafety standards.
- Provide experimental infect laboratory mice with B. burgdorferi by needle inoculation or tick bite.
- Experimentally manipulate Ixodes dammini ticks, including acquisition and transmission of B. burgdorferi through feeding on laboratory mice.
- Dissect infected mice and ticks for isolation of B. burgdorferi, purification of nucleic acids, and imaging by electron microscopy and high-resolution light microscopy.
- Perform bioinformatic analyses of quantitative, genome-wide, nucleic acid sequence data.
- Maintain familiarity with pertinent scientific literature
- Write, prepare, submit and publish papers describing experimental findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
- Deliver oral presentations and effectively communicate with senior colleagues and collaborators.
- Attend and participate in seminars, conferences, weekly lab and group meetings.
- Maintain physical laboratory space as needed to conduct experiments in compliance with safety and biosafety standards.

Requirements
- Ph.D. and at least six (6) years of experience in microbiological, molecular-genetic and bioinformatic investigations of bacterial pathogens, including the agent of Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi.
- Ability to aseptically propagate Borrelia burgdorferi in solid and liquid media under Biosafety Level 2 standards.
- Ability to genetically transform Borrelia burgdorferi and recover clonal transfomants as colonies in selective solid media.
- Ability to characterize the phenotype and genotype of Borrelia burgdorferi clones by microscopy, bioinformatic analyses of DNA and RNA, and protein content.
- Ability to conduct infection studies of Borrelia burdorferi in the murine host and Ixodid tick vector.
- Ability to write, submit and publish papers describing research in peer-reviewed journals.
- Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with intramural and extramural colleagues.
