DOWL is seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated, and highly organized Water Resources Engineer to join our Water Practice in Montana.  DOWL’s Water Practice provides a wide range of services including hydrologic and hydraulic modeling and design for bridge replacements, one-dimensional and two-dimensional hydraulic modeling of floodplains, stormwater master planning and design, watershed modeling, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling and design for rehabilitation of dams, condition assessment and rehabilitation design of hydraulic structures, and stream restoration and fish passage design Our projects and clients span the western United States from Alaska to Arizona and from Montana to Washington. The position will involve a wide range of responsibilities and work assignments, including both office and field work. 

Typical tasks include: 

  • Project and Task Manager for complex, interdisciplinary projects
  • Project management assistance including development of proposals, scope, schedule, and budget. Project execution in accordance with DOWL Operational Excellence procedures.
  • Mentor and supervise other engineers.
  • Planning and design for a variety of water resource projects including bridge replacements, storm drainage systems, stormwater treatment, dams, irrigation canals, floodplain modeling studies, fish passage designs, and other water resource projects.
  • Develop creative and cost-effective design solutions to challenging water infrastructure projects.
  • Conduct field reviews of project sites.
  • Coordination of support staff including word processors, surveyors, CADD drafters, GIS technicians, and resident inspectors.
  • Assist in marketing the services of the Water Practice and other company service lines.
  • Provide client management assistance including active marketing, frequent client communication, client visits, and pursuit of new clients and projects.
  • Travel locally and out-of-state to project sites for meetings or field work.
  • Conduct periodic site visits to construction sites to monitor quality and progress of the work.
  • Consistently exercise discretion and judgment in all work tasks.
  • Oversee the production of construction drawings and specifications.
  • Apply state-of-the-art tools, including GIS, HEC-HMS, and 1D and 2D HEC-RAS, SRH2D, and various other runoff simulation programs to perform and review hydrologic and hydraulic analyses
  • Write and review technical reports
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

The minimum qualifications for this position include: 

  • Bachelor’s degree (M.S. degree preferred) in Civil Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
  • Licensure as a Professional Engineer
  • Have a minimum of 4 years of experience working on water resource-related projects
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. 

Desired qualifications also include: 

  • Experience working on DOT H&H, FEMA Floodplains, or municipal stormwater projects
  • Experience in the use of HY-8, Autodesk Storm & Sanitary Analysis, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, SMS/SRH2D, Flowmaster, ArcGIS, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and MicroStation
  • Excellent technical writing skills. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: 

  • Assist with field investigations, analysis of alternative solutions, cost estimating, technical report writing, final design, and construction inspection.
  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses using computer applications such as HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, and HY-8.
  • Other engineering related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to effectively present information to clients, co-workers, and the public.
  • Able to use Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Project Software.
