University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown (located at 500 E. Market Street, Iowa City, IA) is a 194-bed hospital that became part of Iowa’s only comprehensive academic health system on Jan. 31, 2024.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Review treatment transactions and submit claims to insurance and/or third- party payors.
- Contact patients, insurance companies, and credit/collections for payment acquisition, pre-authorization, and to resolve patient account inquiries.
- Provide financial counseling to patients and families.
- Determine if appropriate payment has been made by various entities and work with patients and insurance companies to obtain correct payments.
- Appeal claim payments and/or denials. Identify undesirable trends and reimbursement modeling errors.
- Review allowed variances from third party payors.
- Meet targets set by supervisors regarding assigned areas of the revenue cycle.
- Identify trends and submit to supervisors to facilitate opportunities for process improvement.
- Utilize new tools and processes to maximize the efficiency of the revenue cycle.
- Comply with the established cash handling policies of the department.
- Compile results of work list and other revenue cycle reports and submit to the supervisor.
- Monitor registration accuracy and report discrepancies.
- Communicate with providers, payors, claims clearinghouses, patients, co-workers, supervisors, and departments to resolve revenue cycle issues.
- May assist or provide training to providers regarding billing procedures.

Education Required:
Experience Requirements:
- Strong attention to detail and proven ability to gather and analyze data and keep accurate records.
- Proficiency with computer software applications, i.e. Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) or comparable programs and an ability to quickly learn and apply new systems knowledge.
- Demonstrated ability to handle complex and ambiguous situations with minimal supervision.
- Self-motivated with initiative to seek out additional responsibilities, tasks and projects.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to maintain or improve established productivity and quality requirements.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Knowledge of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) laws.
- Knowledge of healthcare billing (healthcare revenue cycle) and/or insurance, and/or federal and state assistance programs.
