Position Summary
The Assistant Director of Athletics directly supports the Executive Director of Athletics implementing the district's vision for athletics. This position assists with the coordination of elementary, middle and high school sports programs throughout the District. This includes facilitating the refinement of the sports program framework to execute the actionable work activities necessary to achieve desired performance results, acting as the liaison between the Athletic Office, District staff groups, local school administrators, facility operations, athletic partners, service providers, supplier, donors and parents.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelors' degree in education, business, sports management or a sports related field (preferred)
- Master's degree preferred in educational leadership, business, sports management or sports administration (preferred).
- This position requires a minimum of seven (7-10) years of administrative experience
- Experience as a high school, district, college or university athletics director or coach with a proven track record of success on the field/court and for student athletes
- Preferred experience as a district administrator, principal, assistant principal or college level athletics administrator
- Knowledge and experience in athletics
- Knowledge of budgeting, resource allocation, and maintaining accurate records about inventory
- Strong interpersonal, verbal communication and writing skills
- Administrative ability to coach school leaders, coaches, and teachers
- Knowledge of the MHSAA and NCAA clearinghouse
- Skilled in writing and securing grants
Essential Functions:
- Investigate, collect documentation from school's athletic programs, and parents of student athletes to provide direction to coaches and staff regarding MHSAA compliance including but not limited to student transfers, allegations of undue influence, and ineligible student athletes. Prepare responses to be submitted to the MHSAA.
- Prepare interim and annual budgets for the K-8 and high school sports programs, utilizing the guidelines set forth by the division.
- Provide direct supervision of assigned K-12 athletic coordinators and coaches.
- Evaluate assigned athletic coordinators and coaches according to union and district requirements.
- Develop and implement appropriate programs and services to support the ongoing achievement and development of district student athletes.
- Lead and support investigations related to issues of non-compliance with any required MHSAA or district level guidelines.
- Attend all required department and district-level meetings as assigned by the Executive Director or designee.
- Develop and Implement professional learning for supervisors and other central office staff and, administrators in a fast-paced, high volume environment.
- Oversee the Dissemination log and monitor certification requirements for all coaches (first aid & CAP).
- Maintain comprehensive knowledge of MHSAA and NFHS recommendations and regulations.
- Collaborate with other district departmental leaders to enhance athletic achievements.
- Coordinate and supervise athletic and post season meetings.
- Establish processes to recruit, screen and participate in hiring of coaching candidates.
- Establish regular and consistent presence at assigned schools, athletic events and programs to provide direct support to building administrators as needed, athletic coordinators and coaches.
- Manage Social media, marketing, to increase presence within the community.
- Monitor payroll processing making sure all game day and event staff are paid.
- Include the coordination of overall financial budget, customer, process and continuous improvement work streams necessary to implement seasonal sporting activities. This includes a variety of duties associated with providing administrative assistance in support of DPSCD Athletic Department goals, proactive oversight and performance management, constituent coordination and the community interactions necessary to ensure high quality customer experiences and engagements.
- Plan, organize, and implement sports program by overseeing a variety of sport clinics, intramural and league activities. Work responsibilities also include the ordering of District athletic equipment, supplies, the collection and disposition of registration documents with their associated fees.
- Must work collaboratively and independently to oversee sport activities at designated locations such as school facilities, parks, baseball/softball fields and other facilities. Special events, including weekends, holidays and evenings are included and expected.
- Lead efforts to recruit, on-board, direct and supervise suppliers. Must evaluate suppliers, seasonal staff, instructors, volunteers and participant performance.
- Evolve program requirements and plans well in advance for budgetary recommendations; prepares reports describing and evaluating programs at completion of activity and identifies methods and areas to improve.
- Monitors the day-to-day operations of athletic programs including daily site visits to schools, handling and resolving complaints and ensuring that programs have required materials and supplies, formulates and organizes program plans and schedules for seasonal and/or year-round activities.
- Enforce DPSCD policies, procedures and rules for staff, instructors, volunteers and contracted facility renters as well as enforcement of safety and operating procedures and maintenance needs including compliance with health and safety codes and building codes.
