About the Role:
The Senior Scientist will be part of the team responsible for bringing new and innovative personal care products to life. This role will work in our Research & Development laboratory to prototype new formulas, evaluate ingredients, and collaborate with our operations team to support the continuous improvement of existing products.
Dr. Squatch is continually expanding into new product categories, and this role will be a key contributor to the development efforts for new launches. An interest in contributing to new ideas and excitement about product development is key. The ideal candidate will balance the technical and scientific requirements of the role with the creative side of product development and problem-solving.
This full-time, onsite role with company benefits is based in Marina del Rey, California, reporting to the Director of Research & Development.
The anticipated base compensation range for this role will be $110,000 to $150,000. Compensation will be commensurate with the candidate's experience and local market rates.
What You'll Do:
- Drive innovative product and ingredient research to build a back catalog of unique materials and product ideas
- Explore future-looking trends and product category opportunities for the business, including evaluating benchmarks and creating laboratory prototypes
- Create batches in our laboratory to test new concepts for bases, ingredients, and fragrances
- Act as the technical voice and formula expert in new product development projects, providing insights to the project team as to the technical feasibility of proposed product attributes
- Manage timelines of R&D projects to support the execution of new product launches in accordance with our new product launch calendar
- Coordinate with cross-functional partners, including Operations, Marketing, and the rest of the Product team, to ensure products can be effectively produced at scale and successfully launched via marketing campaigns
- Drive raw material testing for supply chain projects, including onboarding new suppliers and supporting quality assurance initiatives
- Mentor junior scientists to support the development of R&D team capability and technical expertise
- Ensure the laboratory is stocked with necessary raw materials and equipment for batching
- Maintain organization and documentation of laboratory according to GLP and GDP standards
- Create product specifications to document formula, recipe, and release criteria
About You:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or similar science
- 7-10 years experience in cosmetic product development, preferably natural products
- Solid technical background in laboratory work
- Familiarity with GLP and GDP, preferably in an FDA-regulated environment
- Ability to think creatively and contribute to unique product concepts
- Project management, time management, and organizational skills to independently manage multiple projects simultaneously and identify and escalate any potential issues or delays
- Comfort with a rapidly evolving work environment, and experience taking initiative
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
