Responsibilities
Draper is seeking an experienced Patent Attorney to join Draper’s legal team and partner with Draper’s engineering team to protect and enforce Draper’s intellectual property and mitigate risks stemming from intellectual property monetization activities and third-party intellectual property.
The Patent Attorney will work under the direction of the Senior Corporate Counsel, IP. This position will be a hybrid position based in Draper’s Cambridge campus.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Draft and prosecute patent applications related to Draper’s business.
- Assist with reviewing outside counsel work product.
- Carry out freedom to operate and patent landscape analyses and conduct prior art and patent searches.
- Solicit disclosures of inventions and assist inventors in filing timely and accurate disclosures.
- Support IP collection project, patent committees, and training sessions.
- Support pre-litigation and patent licensing activities.
- Provide regular updates regarding the patent portfolio, including tracking filing metrics and benchmarks for the various Draper program teams.
- Assist with other matters as needed.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school and active bar membership
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, physics, or computer engineering.
- At least two years of experience drafting applications and patent prosecution responses.
- Admission to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
- Excellent writing, communication skills and time management skills.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and responsiveness.
- The ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Strong business judgment and analytical skills, and proven record of working effectively with technical and functional internal and external stakeholders.
- Applicants will be required to provide a writing sample.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Active Secret or Top Secret security clearance.
- Experience drafting and prosecuting classified patents.
Security Requirement:
- Applicants selected for this position will be required to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.
