JOB SUMMARY

To assess, treat, and/or test patients with cardiopulmonary dysfunction per physician order(s) and/or protocol(s), and to document the patient response to such. To integrate his/her expertise as a clinician with the intent of improving the quality of patient care and affecting outcomes. To meet or exceed customer expectations of respiratory care.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Care Program:

  • Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT), or
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT), and
  • Successful completion from National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) credentialing program

Certifications from:

  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), and
  • American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and
  • American Academy of Pediatrics Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Punctual and regular attendance
  • Perform all modes of therapeutic respiratory care procedures and patient assessments
  • Perform bedside diagnostic respiratory care procedures
  • Make sound clinical decisions based on policies, procedure, and/or protocols
  • Perform resuscitation techniques
  • Possess knowledge of and demonstrate compliance with OSHA, CLIA, ADH, and other regulatory standards
  • Work independently with patients’ families, ancillary services, employees, physicians, etc.
  • Demonstrate competence with the electronic medical record
  • Possess and adhere to a quality care/cost containment philosophy

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • VENTS: Competently utilizes invasive and non-invasive ventilators that pertains to main work area. Follows protocols per DMHS policy.
  • MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION: Administers and educates patients on all medications delivered by the RCD department. Orders medication according to MD orders. Obtains medication from Omnicell per DMHS policy. Administers and weans oxygen therapy according to DMHS policy.
  • DOCUMENTATION: Documents all activities in the electronic medical record including interdisciplinary care plans and teaching records.
  • PROCEDURES: Provide patient care according to DMHS policy and procedures. Ensure patient safety. Follow infection control policy and procedure. Assess results for validity and communicate with the appropriate caregiver assuring that critical results are understood, documented, and notified.
  • PROTOCOLS/ORDERS: Initial and ongoing assessments are completed within established time frame. Initiate appropriate interventions based on protocols/orders. Communicate appropriate data to healthcare providers in a concise, accurate, and timely manner.
  • ABGs: Performs arterial puncture and analyzes blood. Ensures sample quality prior to analysis. Shows competency in interpreting ABGs and making appropriate changes to ventilator and/or oxygen. Assure that documentation of critical results, quality control, and maintenance are checked and performed according to DMHS ABG policy.
  • OXYGEN THERAPY: Completely utilizes all oxygen devices applied by the RCD. Is knowledgeable of what device should be applied in a given situation. Follows weaning protocols and communicates changes to appropriate caregiver.
  • ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES: Be actively involved in keeping the environment clean and safe. Properly disinfect reusable equipment and prepare equipment and supplies for storage in their designated area according to infection control guidelines.

Physical Requirements:

This position may require physical activities such as balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, grasping, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping, and use of fingers and repetitive movements. An individual in this position may be required to carry or lift weight of up to 50 lbs. and push/pull 100-150 lbs. The sensory and communicative activities required for this position include feeling, hearing, seeing, smelling, and speaking. Individuals in this position could possibly be exposed to inside/outside environmental conditions, blood borne pathogens and body fluids, chemical hazards, respiratory hazards and radiological hazards.

Incumbent must be attentive at all times to their own personal safety, as well as the safety of patients, their families, visitors and employees of Drew Memorial Hospital. Hazardous and/or potentially hazardous conditions are to be immediately reported to a member of management. In accordance with Act 593, this position is considered a “Safety Sensitive Position,” as it requires the incumbent to work with confidential information or documents that may pertain to criminal investigations. Performing life-threatening procedures, working with confidential information or documents pertaining to criminal investigations, or Working with hazardous or flammable materials, controlled substances, food, or medicine.
