GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB:
The Lab Manager, under the supervision of the Medical Director and Administrative Director, plans, coordinates and directs the daily activities of the personnel in assigned sections of the clinical laboratory. The Lab Manager is responsibility for: Assignment of duties, work scheduling; Reviewing and evaluating performance; Maintains appropriate documentation of proficiency for all laboratory personnel in compliance with laboratory policy and regulatory guidelines; Ensures the validity and accuracy of test results; Performs the duties of a Registered Medical Technologist; Responsible for new employees, student training, and documentation within the section; Assures quality of work, work flow, turn-around-time and timely reporting of values; Assures accurate testing to support quality patient care; Oversees maintenance and troubleshooting of instruments within the section; Accept suggestions and corrections; Adjust to changing situations; Ensures that safety precautions and protective attire is used at all times for compliance with hospital and laboratory policies and procedures; Must promote team leadership management approach; Must be familiar with performance and interpretation of laboratory procedures associated with pediatric hospital for patients below the age of 24 years/364 days; Responsible for creation and periodic review of section procedure manual written in accordance with the NCCLS standards; and ensure that Corporate and Laboratory Integrity is in compliance with OIG guidelines. The Lab Manager performs other duties as assigned and is able to work hours beyond those of normal full-time positions to fulfill duties and needs of Driscoll Children's Hospital.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Help to "bring-up" and maintain oversight of the new Molecular Diagnostic department.
  • Maintains utmost level of confidentiality at all times.
  • Adheres to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates business practices and personal actions that are ethical and adhere to corporate compliance and.
  • Maintains appropriate levels of supplies, reagents and request replacements within the established time policies.
  • Assures that supplies are restocked for all three shifts.
  • Confers with physicians and/or nurses on laboratory findings, timing and availability of test results or procedures.
  • Represents the laboratory section technically to assigned committees physicians, nursing staff, support staff and patients.
  • Performs duties and responsibilities of registered medical technologists.
  • Reviews technical work performed in the section at least daily; this includes review of quality control data from the weekend.
  • Revises and reviews procedure manuals according to NCCLS guidelines.
  • Communicates appropriately with coworkers, hospital personnel, physicians and physician offices.
  • Evaluates and validates new reagents, equipment and procedures according to laboratory policies and procedures and regulatory guidelines.
  • Maintains knowledge of new technology and procedures and makes recommendations when appropriate.
  • Assumes duties of senior shift supervisors when working weekends and left in charge.
  • Maintain coverage of the laboratory to provide adequate patient care, which may require "last minute" schedule changes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Effectively administers performance management system including goal setting, assesses competency, and progressive discipline.
  • Strong knowledge of and effective in administering hospital policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for sound management of human resources.
  • Makes and implements decision compatible with organizational goals.
  • Maintains composure, effectiveness, and flexibility under pressure.
  • Supervises the following job classes: MT(ASCP) Lead, MT(ASCP) Senior, MT(ASCP) Staff, MT(ASCP)- eligible, MLT(ASCP), MLT(ASCP)-eligible, Phlebotomy, and Clinical Students
  • Responsible for supervision of section staff.
  • Responsible for specific role during various internal and external CODE and disaster occurrences.
  • Responsible for insuring compliance of Infection control techniques within the Laboratory.
  • Responsible for insuring compliance of Safety techniques within the Laboratory.
  • Responsible for insuring proper security procedures when entering the building and demonstrating appropriate use of ID badge.
  • Responsible for insuring proper use of the Pneumatic Tube System.
  • Responsible for compliance of IOP/CQI issues.
  • Responsible for insuring proper compliance with IOG..
  • Responsible for technical competency of section and staff.
  • Responsible for equipment maintenance and quality control.
  • Responsible for budgetary recommendations within established time limitations.
  • Represents the laboratory section technically to assigned committees physicians, nursing staff support staff and patients.
  • Responsible for adequate staff and scheduled in the most efficient manner possible without compromise to quality.
  • Is responsible for proper operation of equipment and adequate staff and supplies at all times every day in area of responsibility.
  • Responsible for Clinical/ Teaching of the MT and MLT students.
  • Responsible for adhering to all Federal regulations and making sure that the Laboratory is in compliance.
  • Responsible for making sure that your “area of responsibility” is ready for any inspection (example CAP-JCAHO).
  • Responsible for keeping telephone number updated for reasonable contact at all times if needed.
  • Maintains a ratio of 51 % administrative and technical duties and 49% on benchmark duties.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) from a four-year College or University: Required
  • One-year formal university/hospital based accredited course work in Medical Technology beyond a Bachelor' s Degree (Clinical Internship - ASCP).
  • Minimum of six- (6) years of laboratory experience required with three years in
    Immunology/Serology, Microbiology, and Molecular Diagnostics.
