DS Smith is a leading international supplier of paper-based packaging solutions for consumer products, e-commerce, promotion, transit, and industrial applications. Our Cambridge, Maryland facility specializes in making and providing corrugated packaging.
JOB SUMMARY:
This position will be responsible for all set up and operation of machines in designated department and/or providing Shipping team support. Operators may work with computer-controlled equipment or more mechanically based machines.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
- Must have knowledge of machines in a manufacturing setting.
- Must be able to work as a part of a team and independently
- Must meet the ergonomic and physical requirements, as well as the physical base profile (below) for this position
- Must meet the company quality and performance standards for the job as specified
- Must agree to wear the proper assigned PPE and shoes approved for this job as specified in Contact and Safety Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Set up and operation of various machines
- Load and unload materials
- Run material through machine according to company specifications
- Detect and report defective materials or questionable conditions to the department supervisor
- Maintain the work area and equipment in a clean orderly condition and follows prescribed safety regulations
- Ensure correct materials are used to meet customer specifications
- Ensure all inventory entries are complete and accurate
- Inspect and maintain quality of product
- Meet all quality and efficiency standards
- Meet all company safety policies and report any concerns related to required maintenance of machines
- Test operation of machines periodically
- Special projects as business dictate
- Duties may be expanded upon and additional duties may be assigned
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to read, write, and communicate in English as it relates to this position and to the safety regulations
- Ability to follow detailed instructions including reading a tape measure, blueprints, production schematics
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to use, or learn to use, the equipment and tools used to perform this job
- Ability to perform all the job functions safely
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Ability to perform repetitive and physically demanding tasks for extended periods (standing, lifting, walking, climbing, pushing, twisting, stopping, and pulling)
- Frequently required to talk or hear
- The employee is required to reach with hands and arms
- The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Noise level in the work environment can be at times loud
- Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts
- Frequently exposed to (wet, humid, other) conditions
- Occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, vibrations
