Design Engineer

SUMMARY

This position supports design engineering activities including creating and updating drawings, following up on engineering tasks, and entering, evaluating, and summarizing data as requested. Communicating with internal customers such as Marketing, Engineering, Quality, Machinists, and Manufacturing to determine needs and product specifications will be required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

• Generate models and drawings through the Solidworks program (~ 50% of job)
• Develop design criteria using methods such as GD&T and tolerance stack up
• Support and assist the Engineering team in research, design, evaluating, and developing new DSSA, Inc. products through the application of standard engineering principles
• Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, or computer-generated reports and implement drawing changes to meet specification requirements
• Develop and improve specifications to comply with DSSA, Inc. internal and external requirements
• Participate in continuous improvement projects related to existing products
• Investigate and support changes towards improving manufacturability of products
• Work with internal customers to support project goals
• Monitor qualification programs for new and modified products
• Enter data, create data summaries, and prepare written reports as assigned

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Educational requirements of a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or technical certification.  Must be proficient with the CAD program Solidworks. GD&T knowledge and application is required. The minimum required experience includes 5 years in a related field including the use of Solidworks. Experience working with pyrotechnics is highly preferred.

The individual must be able to work effectively and professionally with all levels of employees and management in a team oriented environment.  Proficiency in Microsoft Applications (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) and the CAD program Solidworks as well as excellent communication, motivational and organizational skills. This position requires the ability to read and understand specifications and drawings thoroughly.  The individual must be able to understand all policies, procedures, instructions, rules and regulations associated with this position which are written in English.   In addition, the individual must be able to appropriately respond to these and, where needed, provide reports, presentations, information and communications in English.  Must be available to work days, evenings, or weekends, overtime, and travel domestically and internationally as required.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in written and diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.  Must be able to read, comprehend and interpret, policies, blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports.  Must be able to understand and apply DSSA, Inc. documentation including SOP, MI, PS, PMP, MSP, etc.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to lighting and temperature as required for the office and manufacturing areas.  Appropriate safety equipment is required by area.  There is potential exposure to hazardous chemicals.  A considerable amount of moving from department to department may occur in unfavorable weather conditions.  The employee is exposed to the inherent dangers of the explosive materials used in DSSA, Inc. manufacturing processes.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to move throughout the facility, traverse within production areas, communicate with others, and detect or exchange information or ideas.  The employee occasionally is required to perform functions which require the manual operation of both general office productivity and manufacturing equipment as well as the ability to place, reach, detect, ascend/descend, and position self to navigate within confined working spaces.   The employee is frequently required to remain in a stationary position.  The employee must occasionally move or transport up to 40 pounds.   Specific vision abilities required by this job include close inspection, identification of objects from a distance, color determination, peripheral detection, depth judgment, and the ability to identify details in varying conditions.
