Position can be based in: Cincinnati, OH; Plainfield, IN; Charlotte, NC; Raleigh, NC or St. Petersburg, FL.
Responsible for providing the support necessary to ensure that generating facilities and company operations are in compliance with federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations in addition to corporate environmental policies and procedures. Expertise may be required in the areas of air, water, waste and/or hazardous materials. Works under general direction. Work is reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting objectives and soundness of technical judgment and overall adequacy. Serves as an environmental subject matter expert and provides technical expertise and judgment to resolve basic environmental issues. Assists in investigations which include analyzing and interpreting trends and prepares technical documents on results. Conducts trend analyses, incident investigations and site audits for assigned function. Prepares and submits permit applications and renewals. Evaluates and reviews proposed and existing codes, standards, regulations and guidelines to determine the impact on company programs and facility operations and comments to regulatory authorities. Maintains current knowledge on environmental laws and regulations and a working knowledge on the scientific and technical aspects of regulatory requirements and how they may impact company operations. May provide technical guidance to less experienced personnel working on environmental programs.
Responsibilities
Serves as subject matter expert for basic technical program and compliance issues and supports company's environmental goals, strategies, programs, and processes, with an emphasis on hazardous materials/waste management, disposal, and recycling. With assistance develops and maintains procedures and programs to assist facilities in complying with environmental laws and regulations. Ensures that Duke Energy work procedures address compliance guidance. Tracks regulatory changes, legislative activities and industry standards and assists with identifying needed changes to facility's compliance programs. With guidance works with federal, state, and local regulatory authorities to interpret regulations and laws. Supports Duke Energy on various internal/external industry committees and teams.
Provide regulatory-required and internal environmental reports. Develop assigned environmental training programs.
With guidance prepare, submit and negotiate permits and permit renewals with federal, state and local authorities. Communicate permit requirements to facilities. Works with other EHS Professionals and facility personnel to update various facility plans and documents that require knowledge and experience while minimizing impacts to operational activities.
Supports accomplishment of work unit goals and enhances company reputation through effective planning, organizing, communicating and scheduling of environmental work activities. Supports the department's routine and special projects in order to accomplish business objectives.
Strives to continually develop and improve job-related, technical knowledge and skill to ensure that department expectations are met.
Basic/Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Science, Engineering or closely related discipline and 3 plus years job related experience OR
HS/GED and 7 plus years work related experience in lieu of a degree
Desired Qualifications
Master's degree in Business, Science or Engineering

Professional Engineer

Additional Preferred QualificationsKnowledge of environmental regulatory compliance requirements, scientific practices, quality assurance principles and auditing principles. Experience in applying technical skills in air, water or waste discipline areas.
Experience in the characterization and appropriate management/recycling/disposal of waste materials and/or end-of-life assets in accordance with relevant state and federal requirements.
Effective communication (both oral and written) and interpersonal skills with a customer-oriented focus. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with management.
With guidance can develop and implement systems and processes that comply with environmental laws and regulations, permit conditions, corporate policies, goals, and targets.
Two years' experience in power generation or transmission/distribution operations.
Some experience in negotiating with regulators.
Experience in supporting environmental compliance at multiple facilities within multiple regulatory jurisdictions.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and successfully complete each of them within specified timeframes.
Experience in managing personnel from diverse groups working toward a common goal or objective.
