The Nurse Clinician is responsible and account able for clinicalexpertise for specific patient populations. The incumbe ntfunctions as aclinician, educator, investigator, consultant and leader .Clinicaljudgments are based on a synthesis of current research, concept s,principles, theories, and outcomes to solve complex problems. The Nurs eClinician functions as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team,co ntributing to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and inprov iding leadership to the organization.
Work Performed
Provides specialized nursing treatment, care, and education to patientsi naccordance with physician/nursing orders and established policies andpr ocedures.Serves as a resourceto patients and families, providing preoper ativecounseling and follow-up problem solving after discharge from theho spital.Coordinates the development, utilization, and evaluation of appro priateeducational resources and interventions that assist thepatient/car egiver in developing the skills for self care.Promotes evidence-based pr actice through staff education andparticipation in developing, implement ing, and evaluating processstandards such as plans of care, protocols,an d guidelines. As an APSmember, collaborates in preparing standardizedor ders (CPOE) andprotocol-driven practice updates and reviews.Assessesthe educational needs of the patient/caregiver as it relates tothe disease p rocess, alterations in function, and assimilation back intothe homeand c ommunity.Utilize current nursing and clinical research to support eviden ce-basedclinical decision-making and practiceParticipates in quality/per formance improvement programs and projects,product evaluation, outcomes evaluation studies and/or clinicalresearch..Utilizes teaching and learni ng theories to assist patients and familieswith physical and emotional i mpact of body changes and chronic illness.Provides clinical experience i n a preceptor role for nursing studentsattending institutions thathave c ontractual agreements with DUHS.Participates in the orientation ofnew nu rsing staff and provides expertcoaching and guidance through bothformal and informal one-on-oneteaching with nursing staff.The work environment involves risk discomforts that aretypical of anacute care setting to in clude working with patients under isolation anduniversal precautions.
