MEDICAL ASSISTANT, CERTIFIED - DUKE PRIMARY CARE 

Occ Summary

The Medical Assistant, Certified functions as an integral member of theinterdisciplinary healthcare team in providing di rect patient care. TheMedical Assistant, Certified performs routine admi nistrative and patientcare supportive duties in a Health System medical practice that assistmedical and/or nursing staff in the examination and treatment ofpatients and ensure the clinic/office runs smoothly.


Work Performed

Clinical responsibilities:The CMA takes medic alhistories and records vital signs, explainstreatment procedures to pat ients, and prepares patients for examinationsand procedures.Patient care support responsibilities may includeassisting the medicaland nursing s taffduring examination and procedures, collecting andpreparing laborator yspecimens, performing basic laboratory test in theclinic/office, taking electrocardiograms, removing sutures/ staples,changing sterile and non-s terile dressings, promoting patient/familyunderstanding of the education alcontent and his/her involvement in theplan ofcare, and documenting int he patient record.Otherclinical support responsibilities include disposi ng ofcontaminated supplies, instrument processing, high level disinfecti onand sterilization of medical instruments, telephoning prescriptionstoa pharmacy, preparing and administering medications as directed by aphysic ian, and authorizing drug refills as directed. Performs otherclinicalfunctions as delegated and supervised by the physician.Administrativerespon sibilities:The CMA greets patients, answers telephones, schedulesappoint ments toinclude arrive appointments in MaestroCare, checkout patients, a ndreferral scheduling; arranges forhospital admissions and laboratoryse rvices, updates and files patient medical records, fills out insurancefo rms, handles billing, bookkeeping to include receiving copays andcollect ions on account balances; correspondence, and ordering clinicaland cleri cal supplies and forms. Performs other administrative duties asdirectomm ission and falls and/or participate in clinic committees.


Knowle dge, Skills and Abilities

Good customer service skills.Work requires t he ability to understand and follow oral and writteninstructions general ly acquired through a high school education andmedical assistant program ming.Heavy lifting and the ability to transport stretcher and wheelchair patients may be required.Working knowledge of sterile techniques and spe cial procedures that areapplicable to work performed.Workingknowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administeringroutineand special t reatments to patients.Working knowledge of sanitation,personal hygiene a nd basic health andsafety precautions applicable forwork in a clinic set ting. Workingknowledge of infection control procedures andsafety precaut ions.Age specific competencies.Daily clinic preparation process; registr ation, scheduling, chargeposting, order entry. Ableto document and commu nicate pertinentinformationAbility to establish and maintain effective w orking relationships withpatients and clinic staffTypingskillsMedical te rminologyLevels II and III -- Ability to independently seek out resource s andwork collaboratively

Minimum Qualifications


Education

Level I -- Graduation from accredited Medical Assistant program strongly preferred. High school or GED graduation required. Level II -- Graduation from a medical assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) strongly preferred. High school or GED graduation required. Level III -- Graduation from a medical assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) strongly preferred. High school orGED graduation required. Level IV -- Graduation from a medical assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) strongly preferred.High school or GED graduation required.


Experience

Level I -- No experience required. Level II -- 1 year of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant, Certified in a clinical setting. Level III -- 2 years of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant, Certified in a clinical setting. Level IV -- 3 years of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant, Certified in a clinical setting. Note: 1 year of experience will be provided for an Associate degree in Medical Assisting. General Ladder Statement: In addition to the education and experience noted, applicants must meet all requirements set forth in the Medical Assistant, Certified (CMA/RMA) Ladder Program document for Levels II, III, and IV.


Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

Level I -- Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA or ARMA required. BLS required. Level II -- Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA or ARMA required. BLS required. Level III -- Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA or ARMA required. BLS required. Level IV -- Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA or ARMA required. BLS required.
