GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Irrigation Crew Leader or the Irrigation Supervisor, the Irrigation Specialist will be responsible to operate and maintain irrigation schedules, maintaining the correct flow based on weather conditions and relative to each type of commodity. This position will be independently checking and monitoring fields, incorporating new irrigation practices and coordinating with the Supervisor in correlation with other departments about spray, irrigation and harvesting schedules.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Works directly with the Irrigation Supervisor or Crew Leader to coordinate the application rate of water.
- Will be required to identify the correct moisture for each crop commodities based on current weather conditions or weather predictions.
- Must have the ability to make decisions on the water requirements during the day and night that will prevent overwatering.
- Must be able to work with limited supervision, making judgement calls by considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
- Will be required to check water moisture and determine the correct water needs and applications.
- Assist the Irrigation Crew Leader and Supervisor by coordinating, leading, and training new irrigators who posses little to no experience.
- Required to identify how the water moves through the irrigation system determining how the system should work and how changes in conditions, operations, and the environment will affect outcomes.
- Will be responsible for several booster sites or wells.
- Must be able to identify challenges and find solutions to issues such as but not limited to, wind patterns, leaks, and over/under watering.
- Responsible for a collection of data using applications such as Trimble, KipTraq, or ADP used for monthly water use analysis, labor hours, or traceability for Food Safety, Sustainability Certification or People Safety status reports.
- Adhere to all Food and People Safety policies.
- All other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 3-5 years’ experience in executing irrigation schedules and diagnosing and operating sprinkler systems.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Engineering, Crop Science, Agricultural Systems Management or other agricultural related degree.
- Must have interpersonal, organization and planning skills sufficient to collaborate and communicate with other departments.
- Must have the ability to read, write and interpret material and data in English and Spanish
- Demonstrates leadership, integrity, quality, teamwork, and a sense of urgency in performing duties and responsibilities.
- Must have mechanical aptitude and the ability to troubleshoot and diagnose irrigation pump systems and the ability to read and interpret technical material.
- Proficiency with computer systems and Microsoft Office products.
- Mathematical skills sufficient to calculate percentages, compute how much time to inches.
- Knowledge of common irrigation system components.
- Ability to maintain consistent attendance.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT/WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Must be able to meet physical demands that include but are not limited to lifting to 35lbs., sitting or standing for extended periods of time, working in a sometimes-noisy environment, working in inclement weather conditions and work varying scheduled days and/or hours.
- The core of the work will be done throughout the farm in the center of agriculture acreage– the environment can be loud as well as dusty, cold, or hot depending on the weather conditions.
