Location: Hybrid, with some local travel.

The Engineer 3 will provide timely review and delivery of substation design drawings for capital and maintenance projects, including single lines, substation layouts, plans and sections, and associated equipment drawings that adhere to all applicable standards.

Job Responsibilities:

  • For all projects assigned plan; engineer; design; create drawings, prepare and review estimates, prepare permits, update schedules, create construction orders, and procure material for engineering projects associated with substation equipment
  • Perform technical studies and calculations, assist with the preparation of reports with conclusions and recommendations, assist other engineers with studies to fulfill department goals & objectives
  • Ensure sound engineering principles are employed in accordance with all applicable Duquesne Light Company standards, escalating issues as necessary.
  • Ensure sound engineering principles are employed and in accordance with all applicable codes (NESC, NEC, ANSI, IEEE) and federal, state, local codes, , escalating issues as necessary.
  • Consult with and receive advice from superiors, peers and vendors to become thoroughly familiar with assignments and to obtain necessary design and cost information.
  • Act as project lead for assigned projects as required
  • Participation on the DLC Storm Team is required.

Education /Experience Required

  • Four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited college/university
  • A minimum of 3 years related engineering experience

Education/Experience Preferred

  • Engineering electric utility experience focused on substation physical design
  • EIT certificate preferred
  • Must possess strong organizational, computer, and problem solving skills

Skills Required

  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must be capable of safely walking within a substation environment.
  • Must possess strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Experience with substation engineering drawings i.e. single lines, layouts, sections, grounding, conduit and trench, DC schematics, P&C wiring diagrams, and protection single lines.
  • Knowledge of current design standard principles as outlined within IEEE, NEC, NESC, ettc..
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products
  • Time management

Scope

Primary focus is on daily deliverables, outputs and reporting. Typically accountable for managing one's own time and work flow. Responsible for using prescribed guidelines to analyze situations and solve problems. Work activities are typically moderate to complex in nature requiring the incumbent to draw on previous knowledge to perform role. Continues to build knowledge base but has a solid foundation to act independently the majority of the time. Still draws on experts and managers when needed but less frequently.

Decision Impact

Problems and issues faced are vague. Draws on past experience on a regular basis. Accountable for direct level of reasoning and decision making.

Physical Requirements:

  • The work location is a combination an office environment, field visits, and remote-work from home. Desk and computer work is required.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive to various company sites.
  • Participation in the DLC Storm team is required.
