SUMMARY: 

 

Performs a full range of technical tasks related to the district auditoriums. Serves as sound and/or light technician manager at auditorium functions. Consults with rental clients to discern technical requirements. Enforces established auditorium policies. Assists with the execution of internally and externally developed programs and events when necessary.  Has knowledge of  all technical elements of stage production for performances and other events.  Arrange staffing, lighting, sound, staging, and other necessary items for performances; as well as overseeing inventories, repair and maintenance of theater equipment. This position requires a flexible work schedule in order to meet the needs of the operation, with night and weekend work required.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversees theater technical operations, reporting to Director of Arts. 
  • Consults with rental clients and prospective clients to discern technical requirements.
  • Coordinates with Director of Arts as the primary pre-production manager for all Vista events including but not limited to annual school musicals and plays, dance recitals, graduations, and other district sponsored events.
  • Creates and enforces established auditorium procedures (safety, cleanliness, general rules, etc.)
  • Serve as contact to clients during auditorium use.
  • Participates in set building and design to support high school theater programs.
  • Works with the Director of Arts and Career and Technical Education Director to develop technical theater curriculum, provides hands-on learning experiences for students, and certifies students in operation of technical equipment.
  • Serves as site manager during events at the Vista and other Dysart Theaters.
  • Supervises all box office operations.
  • Work independently and have strong customer service skills.
  • Supports Community Education Facility rentals at all theaters throughout Dysart.
  • Reviews technical riders to ascertain needs for the production, determines feasibility and makes arrangements for special staging, rental equipment, special effects, artist parking and security; monitors budget for the same.
  • Liaison with production/stage managers for visiting artists to advance all events; assures that lighting, stage preparation, sound equipment, lobby set-up and other pre-event preparations are completed to specification.
  • Coordinates and communicates to ensure artist needs are met or exceeded all within financial goals.
  • Coordinates and communicates to ensure accurate scheduling, staffing, catering, rental equipment and other pre-event preparations are carried out for every event.
  • Ensures operational readiness of all major technical systems.
  • Performs safety checks on equipment and facilities, and provides training and oversight of safe working practices, ensuring that safety guidelines are being met.
  • Coordinates the operation of or operates the lighting, rigging and audio systems.
  • Recruits and trains technical staff; approves individuals to operate specific equipment.
  • Schedules, coordinates and supervises the work of regular and temporary workers performing semi-skilled and skilled technical work, for performances, including load-ins, performances, and load-outs.
  • Performs maintenance (including preventative) and repair work as required for both the equipment and the facility; troubleshoots and repairs equipment breakdowns.
  • Maintains production area records: inventory logs, equipment information, warrantees, maintenance and repair logs, service contracts, equipment rental agreements, staff event hours, and billing information.
  • Maintains neat, clean and organized office, theater and stage environment.
  • Maintains fixed and non-affixed asset list in association with Director of Arts.  
  • Keeps time and attendance records of technical staff.
  • Initiates and prioritizes budget proposals of operational and capital purchases and supervises purchases of supplies and equipment to meet production goals.
  • Develops scope of work for major purchases and services by vendors.
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with applicable policies, procedures and safety practices.
  • Establish and maintain good rapport with students, employees, community members and vendors.
  • Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in technical theater production or a related field supplemented by advanced technical courses in lighting, electronics or communications engineering; OR any combination of experience and training which provides comparable knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of supervisory experience managing theater.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience working with school performing arts programs.

LICENSING:

  • Obtain and maintain a valid Arizona Identity Verified Prints (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card (AZ IVP FPCC).

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Standard practices in theater operations.
  • Safe working practices in a theatrical environment.
  • Procedures and techniques required for installation, operation and maintenance of computerized stage lighting, electronic sound systems equipment and mechanical rigging as well as knowledge and experience with safety requirements associated with such equipment; principles and practices of high voltage electrical circuits including single phase electricity, three phase electricity, and cable wiring.
  • Supervisory techniques and practices.
  • Budgeting procedures and practices.
  • Pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations.
  • Customer Service.
  • Management and supervision of student internship and educational programs.

SKILL IN:

  • Prioritizing and managing multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Working independently under pressure and with minimal supervision.
  • Leading and supervising regular, temporary, student and volunteer front of house and technical staff.
  • Envisioning production and anticipating a plan for technical needs and preparation.
  • Modifying and designing equipment and systems to meet event requirements.
  • Designing and running lights and sound for productions.
  • Researching and preparing budget proposals.
  • Coordinating production area purchases.
  • Understanding written and verbal instructions and apply them to the installation of sound, lighting, and rigging scenery systems.
  • Communicating effectively both orally and in writing; providing calm leadership under pressure.

ADA AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Positions in this class typically require:  balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, climbing, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Heavy Work: Exerting up to 50-100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25-50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10-20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Ability to lift 50 pounds.

Working Conditions:  Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor auditorium environment where the employee may be exposed to risk; reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling and climbing stage equipment, working at heights of up to 45 feet, moderate exposure to inadequate lighting, movement restrictions and intense noise. Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing to discern verbal instructions, communicate effectively in person and by phone, hear sounds within normal range of conversation, distinguish emergency warning sounds, and determine the direction of sounds. Sufficient vision or other powers of observation to comprehend written work instructions, setup lighting, sound and audio equipment. Continuously stand or sit for an extended period of time. Require some work in the field with moderate exposure to travel.
