What are the responsibilities and job description for the Inbound Inspector/Estimator position at Eagle Railcar Services?
Position Title: Inbound Inspector
Position Summary:
The Inbound Inspector is responsible for inspecting railcars after arrival to Company yard and prepares and provides accurate estimates for projects by gathering information and analyzing important metrics. The ideal candidate will provide knowledge of cost and benefits that support profitable business decisions. The goal is to provide detailed reports so the company can make informed decisions that will enhance its profitability and growth.
Tasks:
- Inspect cars for all DOT, FRA, and AAR defects.
- Read and understand Scopes of Work (SOW’s)
- Understand drawings and how to get parts off the drawings to ensure ordering of correct parts.
- Build the car file and supporting documentation needed to repair car.
- Enter car information into Railcar RX and generate the BRC.
- Send BRC to the client for approval to work the car.
- Once the car is approved and saved, update Railcar RX and move car to repair.
- Complete requisition forms to order parts for cars as needed.
- Correspond with client regarding any issues with the car and generate any additional work for approval.
- Review car file and add any additional work to the BRC before the file moves to invoicing.
- Has a complete understanding of the AAR field manual for job codes and Y made codes.
- Understand the project and its requirements.
- Determine key variables for cost and other estimates.
- Gather first-hand information from sites, warehouses, or other venues.
- Conduct research to obtain data on labor costs, materials, production times etc.
- Obtain and review offers and quotes from subcontractors or vendors.
- Perform risk analysis.
- Create and submit estimate reports or bids to appropriate persons (plant managers, clients, bidding competitions etc.)
- Build relationships with key vendors (subcontractors, suppliers, engineers etc.)
- Provide consultation on planning (schedules, manpower needs etc.)

- Mechanically inclined
- Be able to enter DATA into the computer.
- Must be able to work at elevated heights.
- Must be able to perform in confined spaces to inspect cars when needed.
- Must be able to read and comprehend basic drawings and scope of work.
- Must possess basic math skills: addition and subtraction.
Requirements:
- Familiarity with financial and project management principles
- In depth knowledge of research and data analysis methods and estimation formulas
- Exquisite math and IT ability with an analytical mindset

Experience and Education:
- BS/BA in engineering, construction science or relevant discipline preferred.
- Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) would be an asset but not required.
- 3-5 years’ experience as an estimator or similar position

Pay: $24.00 - $30.00 per hour
