Job Summary
The purpose of the Guidance Counselor is to provide guidance to secondary school students seeking assistance with school academics that affect spiritual growth, classroom behavior and academic progress. The specific focus of this role is to help students develop academically in a manner that will enable them to be good disciples and stewards of the abilities and strengths God has given.
The Guidance Counselor interacts directly with secondary students, and with parents, staff, and administrators on behalf of students. The Guidance Counselor assists students in various stages of development, learning, and post high school planning. The counselor will be proactive as a liaison between parents, faculty, and administration in support of students academics assigned to them.

- Necessary skills include excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational ability and the ability to meet deadlines.
- Experience in college admissions or high school college counseling, teaching experience, and computer skills are preferred.
- The ideal candidate will have familiarity with the goals, objectives, and mission of an independent college preparatory school; the ability to respond effectively to the needs of a diverse and demanding student and parent population; knowledge of colleges, their academic programs, admission policies, and financial policies and procedures.
- Preferred minimum of 3 years of experience as an Academic Guidance Counselor
- Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field
- Master's Degree preferred in a related field
- Qualify for and maintain appropriate credentials/certifications, including ACSI certification
Responsibilities Academic Guidance
A. Administration
The Guidance Counselor is responsible for the supervision of High School student portfolios. This will involve tracking graduation requirements, publishing important deadlines, and ensuring that the high school student schedules reflect the appropriate college preparatory courses for both current and transfer students.
B. Listing of Academic Guidance Tasks
The Guidance Counselor will:
- Provide college resources, scholarship opportunities, and college application information to students and parents in the appropriate grade levels.
- Understand, evaluate, and interpret academic performance data. Interpret information about students to the student, their parents/guardians, and staff.
- Periodically monitor academic performance for students in grades 6-12 to determine if intervention is necessary.
- Assist in the development of academic policies.
- Submit "Services for Students with Disabilities" accommodations requests to College Board for standardized testing. Advocate and arrange to acquire test accommodations for the ACT and SAT when necessary.
- Conduct career and educational planning activities. Provides high school students with opportunities to assess personal strengths and vocational interests that facilitate career planning.
- Publish important deadlines for the ACT and SAT test programs.
- Order, schedule, and administer the PSAT for sophomores and juniors.
- Arrange for ACT or SAT prep classes and practice testing programs.
- Upload and update senior transcript data on the Bright Futures system.
- Coordinate with PSC to arrange Dual Enrollment courses that will meet on EHCS campus, PSC campus, and PSC online.
- Inform students about the college entrance exam (PERT) in order to qualify for Dual Enrollment as a junior or senior at EHCS.
- Track every high school student’s Community Service hours to ensure the student is meeting the minimum for graduation of 100 hours.
- Meet with individual parents and students in order to customize a class schedule that will enhance the college experience.
- Coordinate with college admissions representatives to facilitate opportunities (college fair) for EHCS students to gain more information about a variety of colleges and universities.
- Set schedules for all students in grades 06-12 and assist in the process of dividing into Honors and College Prep sections.
- Coordinate with Faculty as it relates to Dual Enrollment requirements, textbooks, and deadlines.
- Ensure that the final transcript for a graduate is accurate, complete, and finalized.
- Educating students and parents about colleges, the college admissions process, trends, procedures, and testing; advising and supporting each class of seniors (and their parents) as they go through the process; and helping students and their parents aspire realistically and choose wisely.
- Meeting with juniors and seniors, individually and in groups, to talk about process and individual college choices.
- Meeting with all college admissions representatives who visit our campus and facilitating meetings between college representatives and our students.
- Coordinate and host a minimum of one college fair per school year, in addition to lining up individual college counselors to meet at EHCS throughout the year.
- Writing an official school recommendation for seniors, as requested. To do so, the counselor gathers information from parents, teachers, school records, and students themselves.
- Keeping track of and reporting college acceptances and related statistics to the MS-HS Principal.
- Maintaining and disseminating information about standardized and formative tests (SAT, ACT, IOWA, MAP, STAR, etc). Organize in a spreadsheet and analyze the scoring to show trends and opportunities for growth in the EHCS academic program.
- Assist students with scholarship, college entrance, and financial aid applications.
- Coordinate and organize the Florida Virtual School lab and elective courses for high school students
- Develop a team of tutors in a variety of subjects to assist students as needed, and make the information accessible to parents and students.
- Attend college preparation events to assist EHCS in curriculum development.
- Coordinate with the MS-HS Principal and Educational Specialist to address academic concerns. Coordinate with the Dean of Students to address behavioral concerns.
- Additional duties as needed.
