Elementary General Music Teacher at East Meadow Elementary School (PK-6)
Job Goals:
To inspire curiosity, enjoyment, and appreciation of musical listening, movement, and performance as a part of artistic self-expression and general culture. To begin and develop the fundamentals of musical knowledge and skills through multimodal learning experiences involving listening, reading, and performing in accordance with Massachusetts frameworks and standards.
Education/Work Experience:
PREFERRED:
Experience with or exposure to the methodologies of Orff-Schulwerk, Kodaly, and/or Weikart
Experience in teaching elementary music
REQUIRED:
MA teaching certification in at least one of the following:
Instrumental music (4th-12th)
Choral music (4th-12th)
Elementary classroom music (pre K-6th)
Performance Responsibilities:
1. Teaches skills in music appreciation, harmony, and explorations in music, and in
instrumental music.
2. Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and
administrative regulations and procedures of the schools.
3. Plans a balanced music program and organizes daily class time to ensure students have time to learn, practice and apply new skills and techniques.
4. Provides individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of
each pupil.
5. Uses repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary,
that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of pupils.
6. Controls the storage and use of school-owned property; makes minor adjustments and
requests repairs to instruments as required.
7. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive learning environment during classroom music-making activities.
8. Evaluates each pupil’s musical growth and performance, assessing each individual’s
contribution to the performance of the group.
9. Plans, facilitates, and directs pupils in classroom music-making activities.
10. Communicates with parents and school counselors on pupil’s progress.
11. Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping
pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
12. Cooperates with the school administration and, when appropriate, the Jr/Sr High School Music Teacher/Band Director to provide opportunities for students to showcase their work.
13. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by
the school and self-selected professional growth activities related to music.
14. Selects and requisitions books, musical instruments, and instructional aids; maintains
required inventory records.
15. Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities as assigned.
16. Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of pupil activities.
17. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
18. Acts as Mandated Reporter (Chapter 119, Section 51A).
19. Complies with the Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Policy.
20. Collaborates with Jr/Sr High School Music Teacher/Band Director
21. Any other duties as assigned by Administration
Physical Requirements:
The position requires a moderate amount of walking, standing, sitting, and climbing stairs and step stool whenever necessary. Activities also include moderate physical exertion in body movement such as reaching, bending, twisting, grasping, pushing, and pulling objects. The position requires lifting objects of twenty (20) pounds on a frequent basis, and over twenty (20) pounds occasionally. There is a frequent requirement of fine manipulation associated with the required use of a computer, typewriter, keyboard, calculator, and other business machines.
Environmental Conditions:
The employee is required to work indoors. The regular chemical solvents are toners and cleaning fluids.
