What are the responsibilities and job description for the Farm Manager position at Eastern Utah Farms?
The Farm Manager is responsible for planning, budgeting, organizing, and directing activities related to reclamation of an approximately 5,000 acre irrigated farm which has gone fallow over the 2023 and 2024 farming seasons. The farm is part of a 12,000-land assemblage located in Green River, Utah. You should have experience with farming water storage and distribution systems, electric panels, and large pieces of equipment such as irrigation pivots. Your responsibilities include ensuring the pumps, electric motors, and panels are working properly. You are also responsible for evaluating the condition of farm equipment, scheduling maintenance for equipment identified as necessary for reclamation activities, and working with management on a disposition plan for equipment no longer needed. The ideal candidate will be a proactive and team-oriented individual with strong organizational and management skills.
Note: no activities that require drawing water out of the Green River can be initiated until October 1, 2024. This position is currently temporary, between 3 – 12 months of expected work. There is the potential for the position to transition to permanent.
Responsibilities:
Manage overall farm operations:
- Work with management to develop a detailed plan of activities required to prepare the farm for the 2025 season.
- Coordinate employee schedules and activities.
- Prepare annual forecasts and budgets, ensuring alignment with reclamation goals.
- Recruit, supervise, and train farm staff, maintaining ongoing training programs.
- Purchase necessary supplies, build relationships with vendors, clients, and neighboring land owners, and control production costs.
- Maintain an active inventory of equipment on the farm and their conditions.
Supervise daily operations:
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and OSHA standards.
- Assess and recommend solutions for farm-related problems.
- Ensure all pivots and irrigation is functional and fully operational.
Oversee specific activities:
- Evaluate condition of water storage ponds and oversee repairs necessary to minimize seepage.
- Work with management on the Section 34 pond to bring into compliance.
- Test center pivots for functional condition. Locate SCADA systems and rework pivots with nozzle and regulator packages.
- Upgrade River Draft station to minimize debris and unwanted material collecting in the pump vault.
- Work with Farm Security personnel to secure the shop, River Draft station, East Side ditch water diversion area, and fields.
Prepare fields for the 2025 growing season. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Gopher/rodent control
- Clear fields of rocks, tumbleweeds, tire track ruts
- Test water storage and distribution systems starting October 1st
- Identify fields requiring fall cover crop planting; plant cover crop
- Identify chemical/fertilizer application needs, then treat fields accordingly
- Day to day water management starting October 1st
- On or around mid-November winterize and flush water distribution equipment
- Carry out any other repair/maintenance/improvement activities that prepare the farm for the 2025 growing season.
Personnel management:
- Manage personnel and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in agriculture or equivalent preferred.
- 5 years of farm management/supervisory production experience.
- Experience with irrigation systems and pivots required.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Documents.
- Strong planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong and sound decision making skills.
- High initiative and ability to work with little direction.
- Valid driver's license.
Physical Demands
- Ability to sit, stand and/or walk on uneven (or floating) terrain for up to 8 hours a day.
- Flexibility of movement (bend, kneel, twist, squat throughout the day).
- Ability to lift 50lbs.
- Agility to climb on machines, trucks, etc.
- Experience in heavy equipment operation a plus.
