What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lifeguard position at Eau Claire YMCA?
POSITION SUMMARY
The Lifeguard is a key member of the Aquatics team that is responsible for supervising the aquatics area to prevent accidents, assist swimmers, and respond to emergencies. Each member of our Lifeguard team creates a safe, positive and enjoyable atmosphere that promotes member safety and satisfaction in accordance with the YMCA policies and procedures. A Lifeguard builds positive relationships with members and program participants through effective listening and verbal skills. You will oversee multiple activities including open swim, water exercise, swim lessons and lap swimming.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum age of 15
- Current YMCA or American Red Cross certifications as well as current First Aid, AED, CPR and Oxygen Administration certifications or must successfully complete the YMCA’s Lifeguard course resulting in certification.
- Child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date
- Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness
- Physical mobility to properly use aquatic equipment to rescue a 200 lb. person and meet other physical requirements required for job certification.
- Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Maintains constant surveillance of patrons in the facility; acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency. Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services. Follows all Blood borne pathogen procedures when administering any First Aid.
2. Complete all forms and reports according to documentation procedures.
3. Knows and reviews all emergency procedures in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures and completes related reports as required.
4. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool area. 5. Remains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others.
6. Maintains good communication with the Aquatics Director/Managers and co-workers.
7. Maintains and actively participates in obtaining further job-related certifications and documents completion of certifications with Aquatics Director.
8. Inspect aquatic and safety equipment on a daily basis; ensuring all equipment is in good working condition and notifies Aquatics Director/Managers of any damaged equipment.
9. Advises Aquatics Director/Managers of unsafe and unsanitary conditions.
10. Participate in all in-service trainings and staff meetings as scheduled by Aquatics Director/Managers.
11. Maintain a high level of personal fitness in order to properly perform rescue skills and emergency action plans.
12. Perform cleaning and other duties as assigned.
13. Ability to travel to off-site locations if needed.
