A skilled Lead Machine Builder uses their knowledge of custom automation and precision machining to manage the build of automated assembly systems. These machines are uniquely designed assembly, inspection and test systems for industries that demand precision assembly for their components. Some of these industries include automotive, aerospace & medical equipment. A machine builder develops his plans by studying blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, machining parameters & interpreting geometric dimensions and tolerances. (GD&T)
Job Duties
- Fits and assembles components according to assembly blue prints, manuals, sketches and has the knowledge of machine construction to construct, rebuild and repair machines and equipment, using hand tools and power tools.
- Sets up and operates metalworking machines, such as milling and grinding machines, to shape or fabricate parts.
- Verifies the conformance of parts to the engineering stock list and blueprints by using measuring instruments, such as calipers, gauges and micrometers.
- May be required to layout hole locations on their own to drill and tap holes on parts for the assembly process.
- Aligns mechanical components for assembly, manually or with or with a hoist.
- Bolts, screws, dowels, welds or rivets parts together using hand tools, rivet gun and welding equipment or coordinates with a welder or electrician to complete this work.
- Uses a blue pigment (Dykem) on parts and mates them to detect high spots on any surfaces.
- Removes any high spots and smooths surfaces using a manual Bridgeport, lathe, or surface grinder.
- Before beginning fabrication, the machine builder must be able to interpret the parts design from blueprints to correctly determine if the proper material has been selected by the engineer. Communication with the engineers may be required to make any necessary changes.
- Operates the machine to verify functionality, machine capability and conformance to the customer’s specifications.
- Maintains safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations.
- Maintains continuity among work shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
- Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities & reading technical publications.
Machine Builder Skills and Qualifications:
- Good working knowledge of basic math, trigonometry & geometry must be used in the shop environment.
- Solid background in blue print reading, machining, machine assembly, trouble shooting & problem solving.
- Uses precision measuring instruments to verify the quality of the products which have been machined through their machining efforts or someone else’s.
- A machine builder must be able to evaluate product quality and make key decisions which are required to produce a quality product.

Requirements:
- High School Degree
- 5-10 years of experience as a machine builder leadman or helper
- DOL Journeymen Certificate desirable.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory duties. However, as a Lead, the position will require mentorship and guidance to less advanced team members.
Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
