GENERAL SUMMARY:

 

Performs, under general direction and according to established guidelines and procedures, routine and complex procedures to obtain data for use in the clinical diagnosis of disorders of the nervous system in at least one of the following modalities of Neurodiagnostics: Electroencephalography (EEG), Evoked Potentials (EP), Epilepsy Monitoring and Polysomnography (PSG), or Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS). Performs duties in various diagnostic and research areas as assigned. Assists with the daily operations of the department. Trains and mentor’s new staff.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

·       Performs Routine EEG, VEEG, LTM, EMU phase I and phase II (intracranial implanted electrodes) set-ups, intra and extra operative cortical brain mapping, electrocorticography (EcOGs), Neuro and Vascular Surgery monitoring, Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS) programming.

·       Schedules patients for neurodiagnostic procedures and obtain required medical information; explain procedures, alleviate fears, and elicit cooperation.

·       Prepares patient for tests to include measuring and marking cranial area and fastening electrodes to specified positions on scalp and body.

·       Documents pertinent medical history from the patient or family members.

·       Operates computer equipment to record nervous system responses that provide quantitative and objective measures of the neuronal/sensory function.

·       Performs procedures with appropriate documentation.

·       Identifies EEG waveforms/patterns during testing and communicate to medical personnel.

·       Recognizes changes in the clinical condition of the patient and correlate those changes with the EEG.

·       Discriminates the changes requiring intervention such as seizures or cardiac arrhythmia.

·       Cleans, adjusts and performs routine maintenance and repair on neurodiagnostic equipment to ensure proper functioning.

·       Troubleshoots routine equipment problems.

·       Collaborates with supervisor and medical personnel to resolve problems and to advise concerning laboratory procedures, techniques and equipment.

·       Reacts in medical emergencies to ensure patient safety; knows unit and hospital procedures for working with high acuity patients.

·       Reviews and edits ambulatory EEG studies prior to physician review. Maintains current digital EEGs on the central workstations for physician review.

·       Archives and verifies digital EEGs on permanent storage media.

 

Performs the following additional responsibilities:

·       Assists with supervisory duties in the absence of a Lead or Supervisor such as designating work assignments, overseeing junior staff and ensuring quality work production.

·        Triages long term ICU and OR EEG monitoring of patients; ensures that studies are reviewed, edited and sent to server for physician action.

·       Facilitates communication between physicians and other departments by ensuring that appropriate studies are completed and communication between departments is maintained.

·       Provides in-service education within the department and for external services such as Grand Rounds, ICU Orientation, etc.

·       Provides quality patient care and interaction as well as basic knowledge and technical performance as defined by the ACNS guidelines.

·       Assists the department with maintaining continuing education by reviewing literature and attending educational meetings for the latest accepted practices and electrical safety relevant to equipment and testing.

·       Participates in tutoring, demonstrating, and mentoring other team members.

·       Works closely with the epilepsy team: physicians, nursing and techs to promote and maintain education and quality control.

Provides and upholds the highest technical standards according to ABRET and HFHS policies and procedures.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

· High School or G.E.D. equivalent.

· Five or more years of experience in the performance of EEG procedures.

 

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:

· Credentialed in Radiologic Electroencephalography Technologists (R. EEG T.).

· Current BLS certification.

· Passed examination by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic Technologists (ABRET) and has proven competence in all EEG modalities.
