JOB SUMMARY
Under the general direction of the Director of Surgical Services, the Certified Surgical Technologist will aid the professional nurse or doctor in giving patient care to those patients requiring surgical procedures during the operative and immediate post-operative recovery phase, in accordance with JCAHO, federal, state, and local guidelines, organizational and departmental policies and procedures. Communicates with medical staff, other departments, and outside agencies while maintaining confidentiality. Position requires self-motivation, creativity, and capabilities to function in a semi-autonomous role within a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE
- Checks schedule for assignments, type of case, doctor, patient information, special instruments, and/or necessary equipment needed for the procedure.
- Disinfects and wipes down the OR suite according to policy and procedure.
- Obtain preference card and pull case and set up equipment and supplies accordingly.
- Gowns, Gloves, and Scrubs according to Policy and Procedure.
- Provide patient support as needed. Assist RN with induction and intubation. Ensure the patient is properly positioned for procedures.
- Assist surgeon with gloving, gowning, scrubbing.
- Assist with surgical prep and draping of patients.
- Apply sterile light handles and adjust lights over the operating field.
- Keep the sterile field neat and orderly, anticipate the surgeon’s needs, and preferences.
- Maintain sterile field at all times, observe and report any break in aseptic technique.
- Verbally report labels, drugs & solutions, dosage, expiration date, of all supplies used during the procedure, and patient allergies. Label all medications and solutions on the sterile field.
- Assist with sponge counts.
- Handles specimens appropriately.
- Assures quiet in the room during intubation and extubation.
- Assist with transportation of patients, OR cleanup, storing unused supplies and equipment.
- Wash and perform maintenance checks on instruments. Set up sterile surgical trays, keeping accurate records of sterilizer usage according to policies and procedures.
- Ensure that the OR suite is clean, organized, restocked, etc., each day according to policy and procedure.
- Demonstrates good working knowledge of OR procedures, surgical techniques, medical and surgical equipment.
- Reports equipment and supplies need to the Operating Room Manager.
- Ensures departmental adherence to proper infection control, OSHA and safety standards.
- Other duties as assigned or necessary.
- Coordinates and participates in continuing education.
- Responsible for maintaining organizational facilities in accordance with JCAHO, federal and state, organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
Requirements
Minimum Level of Education: Education level equivalent to completing high school. Graduate from an accredited educational program for Surgical Technology required.
Formal Training: Outpatient care experience. Hospital experience. Ability to use and apply medical expertise. Strong Written and Verbal Communication Skills required.
Licensure, Certification, Registration: Certification as CST/Scrub Tech) required within 12 months of hire date. Must have and maintain BLS-CPR certification.
Work Experience: Two years of hospital experience required. One-Year related experience, in an operating room setting as a Surgical Technologist (preferred), and/or equivalent combination of training, education, and experience.
