Full-Time Quality Assurance Scientist
Food Company in Malvern has an opening for a full-time Quality Assurance Scientist. 1-3 years of experience working in a laboratory setting is preferred, however a recent graduate with a BS in biology, microbiology, chemistry, animal science, food science or closely related discipline would be considered.
We are in need of an individual with previous laboratory experience to perform our routine laboratory testing in our quality assurance labs. We have two laboratories: wet chemistry, and food microbiology, so the ideal individual would have a strong foundation of both disciplines to be cross trained. This role will support senior scientists and technologists in achieving daily laboratory priorities, working toward the common goal of the quality assurance laboratory, increased product quality.
Job Duties:
- Under regular supervision conducts research analysis, synthesis, and experimentation in accordance with established industry practices and methods
- Perform routine and non-routine microbiological testing on further processed products using aseptic technique.
- Gathers and records all observations and data, analyzes and interprets information obtained for all technical implications
- Prepares project reports as required
- Teams with other laboratory staff aimed at the efficient and effective attainment of project objectives
- Understands effective utilization of analytical instruments, methods, and processes in extracting information from electronic systems and materials
- Maintains professional understanding on safety practices associated with hazardous materials used in both chemistry and biology. Understands current handling, storage, and accountability procedures as defined by Federal and State agencies.
- Practices proper use of PPE while conducting laboratory functions
- Maintains strict confidentiality of all information
- Receiving, labeling, and safely storing samples to be tested
- Determining and performing tests needed for specific analyses and reports
- Recording tests and analyses and then reporting the results
- Discussing and clarifying any questions regarding the results
- Organizing and storing samples in accordance with all safety and other requirements to ensure the safety of personnel and integrity of each sample
- Maintaining routine outside lab sampling shipments, schedules, and records
- Cleaning and maintaining laboratory work space, including equipment
- Maintaining equipment records and daily work logs
- Staying current on technical and scientific advances in their field
- Some agricultural practices included but not limited to the following
- Hen care at established research facility will include feedings, environmental monitoring, assessing hen wellbeing, and maintaining cleanliness of facility
- Research duties will include project management at the facility
Skills and Qualifications:
- Laboratory Skills: proficiency in laboratory techniques and equipment commonly used in food analysis- such as pipetting, Gas Chromatography, microbiological testing, microscopy, spectrometry, etc.
- Knowledge of microbiological based assays such as Gram stain, plate counts and serial dilutions.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills to perform accurate tests, measurements, and documentation.
- Ability to practice good aseptic technique
- Good hand-eye coordination
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to perform repetitive tasks for extended periods without losing focus and accuracy
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Able to follow instructions and strictly follow procedures
- Ability to team with hi-tech staff and projects
- Ability to communicate regularly with cooperative partners and relay and request information in a respectful, proprietary manner
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Microbiology, Biology, Animal Science, Food Science, or closely related discipline
- 1-3 years of laboratory experience. If no working laboratory experience, academic laboratory experience may be considered.
- Working knowledge of lab specific techniques, applications, and processes
- Ability to execute routine and non-routine analysis
- In-depth instrumentation knowledge and troubleshooting abilities
- Ability to team with hi-tech staff and projects
- Ability to communicate technical research and report data to management
- Must be able to stand and move about laboratory environment for majority of the work day
- Must be able to lift 30 pounds
- Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office skills required (Outlook, Word, Excel)
- The ability to work independently as well as with others is essential
Schedule:
- 40 hours per week, in-office/laboratory, typically Monday-Friday 8:30am-5:00pm with flexibility to shift schedule 1-2 days per week to 9:30am-6:00pm
- Research facility management averaging 1-2 days per week, Monday – Friday
