SUMMARY: The Egyptian Theatre in DeKalb, Illinois, seeks an energetic, passionate, and hard-working individual to join the team. Seeking an individual who will take pride in maintaining this historic community jewel. One of only seven Egyptian Theatre’s left in the United States and the only one remaining east of the Rocky Mountains. This position will include, but not limited to, maintenance and repairs of the historic building along with hiring and supervising janitorial staff. The position also is responsible for the maintenance and janitorial upkeep of two adjacent commercial one-story buildings with tenants.
The Egyptian Theatre opened in 1929. Theatre seats 1,400. Programming includes over 180 events per year, host to over 30 different community organizations each year, 25 touring shows, 40 films, and many private events in total welcoming over 50,000 guests per year.
The historic Egyptian Theatre is owned and operated by the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization Preservation of Egyptian Theatre, Inc.
Mission Statement: To share and protect the historical integrity of the theatre as a regional arts center for entertainment and community involvement.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for hiring/firing, training, scheduling, and supervising janitorial staff. Janitorial duties include, but are not limited to, vacuuming, dusting, cleaning, and sanitizing all interior areas using established procedures and cleaning supplies, and emptying trash receptacles. Areas include auditorium, office areas, stage, dressing rooms, lobby, restrooms and all other interior areas.
- Responsible for janitorial duties when cleaning staff is unavailable or for minor daily touch ups.
- Responsible for exterior grounds cleaning. This includes, but is not limited to, cleaning up trash around the building, removing graffiti, weeds, and general upkeep of landscaping.
- Responsible for budget, inventory, and ordering of all cleaning supplies.
- Works in coordination with other staff to keep food service equipment clean, sanitary, and operating.
- Responsible for building maintenance which includes, but is not limited to, mechanical systems, HVAC controls, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, plaster, fire and life safety systems, flooring, tuckpointing, roofing, and more.
- Responsible for building maintenance projects conducted by outside contractors.
- Responsible for managing HVAC Building Automation System which includes scheduling systems based off of building use.
- Responsible for annual building permits along with monthly inspections and tests.
- Responsible for changing the marquee letter boards as required.
- In winter, responsible for removing snow and ice from entry areas, loading areas, and emergency exits, as necessary.
- Using excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, volunteers, theatre renters and all members of the general public.
- Responsible for the set up and tear down of equipment for events, including tables and chairs.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of building maintenance including housekeeping and janitorial procedures and ability to operate the related equipment. Knowledge of janitorial products and application procedures to ensure public safety.
- Background in general building maintenance.
- Ability to make minor repairs to facilities, including painting, plumbing, electrical and carpentry.
- Ability to work in a busy environment with members of the public, volunteers, outside production crews and artists.
- Self-motivated and able to stay busy without constant supervision.
- Prioritizes safety and maintains high standards.
Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be standing and moving while working. Employee must have the ability to crouch, bend over, climb stairs, and be on feet for extended periods of time.
- The employee must have the ability to climb ladders and be comfortable with heights.
- The employee may frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 75 pounds.
- The employee will work both inside and outside during all weather conditions.
Other Considerations:
Regular work hours can be 8 hours a day / 5 days a week. Must have the ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays if needed. Hours/days will vary in accordance with show schedule and special events.
Employee must have a valid drivers license.
This position is a building emergency response position and as such, preference will be given to those that live less than 30 minutes from the Egyptian Theatre. A change in living location after being hired may impact employment.
This is a full-time salary exempt position.
This position reports to the Egyptian Theatre Executive Director.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Starting salary range: $50,000 - $58,000
- Health reimbursement plan: $344.50/month for individual, $530/month for married or those with dependents
