Minimum Qualifications:

High school education and five years of related experience, or equivalent.

 

Job Summary:

Provides technical assistance in the administration of policies, standards, and regulations relating to environmental health and safety. 

 

Job Duties:

  • The primary role of this position is to provide chemical and radioactive material hazardous waste pick up and disposal services for the University. Waste management training will be provided for this position and will be responsible for responding to hazardous waste emergency spill response remediation.
  • Collection, segregation, and overall management of hazardous wastes (Chemical, Radiological, Regulated Medical).
  • Develops schedules to meet compliance time frames.
  • Supports customers regarding environmental, health, & safety related compliance.
  • Researches, implements technical requirements for tracking and monitoring equipment.
  • Applies knowledge of environmental and safety, policies and procedures to support customers.
  • Provides quality technical support in all areas to diversified customers.
  • Monitors facilities for hazard levels to ensure worker and public safety.
  • Assists in calibration or inspection of safety equipment.
  • Assists in the development and delivery of safety training programs.
  • Develops and implements new/improved work processes.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge in environmental health & safety regulations
  • Ability to inspect, test, monitor, or measure safe environmental levels
  • Introductory knowledge in environmental health and safety regulations
  • Ability to inspect, test, monitor, or measure safe environmental levels for hazardous materials
  • Ability to evaluate observed conditions and provide recommendations
  • Demonstrate use of Microsoft Office products, including Outlook, Word, Excel and Power Point
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written

 

Working Environment:

  • Standard hospital, clinical, laboratory and/or office environments.
  • Potential exposure to hazardous conditions and/or materials and involves strenuous activity such as walking, lifting, and moving of material.
  • May require the use of personal protective equipment such as respiratory protection, chemical resistant clothing, etc.
  • Standard office equipment and equipment used to ensure safe environmental levels.
  • Position may be subject to DOT regulations which include drug and alcohol testing. Testing includes pre-employment, random and for cause.

 

Licenses, Registrations or Certifications

  • Will be required to pass the "Basic Radiation Safety in the Laboratory" course within the first 6 months of employment.
  • Will be required to achieve or maintain Hazardous Waste Operations certification according to 40 CFR 1910 requirements within first 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to use UTMB vehicles.

 

Department Overview

The mission of Environmental Health and Safety is to work with our customers to provide a workplace free of recognized hazards in support of the UTMB mission to improve health for the people of Texas and around the world.

The environmental protection management department provides proactive programs dedicated to technical services for protecting UTMB’s environmental liabilities. We provide regulatory oversight for UTMB programs/ departments regarding identifying and managing the disposal of hazardous wastes, developing and managing water pollution control strategies and plans, and monitoring environmental issues and determining their impacts on current and future operations.

 

Salary Range:

$63,120.00 to $78,900.00,  actual salary commensurate with experience.

 

Work Schedule:

Monday – Friday, 8am - 5pm, alternative schedules and locations may be required to support program
