SUMMARY
Establishes and promotes the maintenance of a safe, accident-free, and healthy work environment. Plans, directs, and coordinates environmental activities of the foundry to include the permitting of systems in the air, water, solid waste and hazardous waste areas and recycling of residual materials (i.e. spent sands, slag, etc.). Carries out the Corporate Environmental Policy which is to maximize the use of recyclable or reusable materials in production processes, minimize the impact of production processes and products on the environment and strive for continuous environmental improvement.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES accomplished personally or through subordinates include the following.
- Promotes the culture, the mission and vision, and the core values of the company. This includes adherence to and promotion of the company safety beliefs, employee engagement, competencies, code of conduct, and other policies and procedures.
- Makes studies and analyses of industrial accident causes and hazards to health for use by EJ personnel.
- Formulates general safety policies and procedures to be followed by EJ personnel in compliance with state and federal OSHA rules and regulations.
- Consults with all departments on design and use of equipment, shops, fire prevention and safety program.
- Inspects or tours EJ facilities and offices to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards, and recommends corrective or preventative measures where indicated. Provides training where necessary.
- Keeps managers and employees alerted as to the hazards of working with toxic fumes, dangerous chemicals, and any other hazardous substances.
- Continually monitors compliance issues such as MSDS files, OSHA reporting, etc. Conducts in plant surveys where necessary to monitor possible health hazards.
- Participates in the investigation of accidents and injuries and prepares material and evidence for EJ use in hearings, law suits, and insurance investigations.
- Compiles, submits and maintains all accident reports required by regulatory agencies, as well as internal reports and records.
- Oversees the administration of worker's compensation programs, including occupational rehabilitation, return to light duty concerns, disputed claims and settlement negotiations.
- Devises, supervises, and coordinates training programs or media which will increase proficiency in safe practices and promote safety consciousness.
- Prepares and arranges safety exhibits and material for display, promotional work, industry conferences and exhibitions.
- Represents the organization in community or industry safety groups and programs.
- Ensures that the safety department staff is properly trained.
- Works in conjunction with engineering department to maintain environmental compliance.
- Develops and maintain all facility permits covering equipment and process material for air, water, and solid waste areas (i.e. Title V, NPDES, Stormwater).
- Establishes and maintains all environmental recordkeeping and reporting functions (i.e. SARA Tier II, Form R, MAERS reports).
- Assists in selecting contractors and consultants and manages their efforts in specific environmental project areas (i.e. stack testing).
- Coordinates disposal of all foundry residual materials (i.e. solid waste, waste oil, and waste coolants).
- Plans and coordinates recycling activities for foundry by-products and maintains material records.
- Works with local, state and federal regulatory agency personnel to obtain permits and inspect process operations.
- Promotes company and industry environmental interests through participation with appropriate industry associations.
- Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly supervises employees in the Safety and Environmental Departments. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree required; and three or more years of safety and or environmental related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, environmental regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Safety & Health & Safety Official (CHSO) preferred.
