The CT Technologist is responsible for operating CT scanning equipment to create detailed cross-sectional images of patients’ internal organs, bones, tissues, and blood vessels. The CT Tech collaborates with radiologists and other healthcare providers to ensure high-quality diagnostic imaging. In addition to performing scans, the CT Tech is responsible for patient preparation, ensuring safety protocols are followed, and maintaining equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Patient Preparation:
  • Greet and verify patient identity according to hospital or facility protocols.
  • Explain CT scan procedures to patients, ensuring they understand the process and what to expect.
  • Prepare patients for CT scans, including positioning them correctly on the examination table.
  • Administer oral or intravenous contrast agents when necessary under the guidance of a physician.
  • CT Scan Operations:
  • Operate CT scanning equipment to capture images of the designated body area as requested by the physician.
  • Adjust scan parameters and settings based on the type of scan (e.g., head, chest, abdomen) to ensure optimal image quality.
  • Monitor patient during the scan for any signs of discomfort or complications and provide assistance if needed.
  • Review CT images for quality and clarity before forwarding them to the radiologist for interpretation.
  • Safety and Compliance:
  • Follow radiation safety protocols to minimize exposure to patients, staff, and self.
  • Ensure proper use of lead aprons, shields, and other protective equipment.
  • Monitor and document the amount of radiation used during the scan.
  • Stay compliant with federal, state, and hospital regulations regarding radiation safety.
  • Equipment Management:
  • Perform routine maintenance and calibration of CT scanning equipment to ensure proper functionality.
  • Troubleshoot minor issues with equipment and notify the appropriate department for repairs as needed.
  • Keep the CT scanner area clean and organized, maintaining a safe and efficient working environment.
  • Patient Records and Documentation:
  • Maintain accurate and complete patient records, including documenting the procedure performed, any contrast agents used, and radiation dosages.
  • Ensure that all patient images and reports are stored and transmitted in accordance with hospital policies and HIPAA regulations.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
  • Collaborate with radiologists, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to review imaging results and provide input on patient care.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and their families, offering emotional support and responding to any concerns or questions.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, training, and continuing education programs as needed.

  • In-depth knowledge of CT scanning techniques and imaging procedures.
  • Proficiency in operating CT scanning machines and related equipment.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education:
  • Associate's Degree or higher in Radiologic Technology or a related field from an accredited program.
  • Licensure and Certifications:
  • ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) certification in Radiography (R) required.
  • ARRT (CT) certification or eligibility to obtain certification in CT scanning is highly preferred.
  • State licensure (if required by state regulations).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Experience:
  • Previous experience in general radiology and CT scanning is highly preferred.
  • 1-2 years of experience working as a CT Technologist or Radiologic Technologist in a hospital or imaging facility is advantageous.
  • Experience working with both adult and pediatric patients is beneficial.

Work Environment:

  • The work is performed in a hospital, outpatient imaging center, or other healthcare facilities.
  • May be exposed to radiation and must follow strict safety protocols to minimize risks.
  • Requires standing for extended periods, positioning patients, and operating equipment.
  • Shifts may include days, nights, weekends, or holidays, depending on facility needs.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, and lift patients or equipment regularly.
  • Ability to move and position patients who may have limited mobility.
