Job Description

Title: Materials/Purchasing Manager FLSA status: Exempt

Pay Range: $60,000 – $80,000

Date: 3/2022

Scope of Job Responsibilities The Materials/Purchasing Manager directs and coordinates the procurement of raw materials, product components, manufacturing supplies and services related to the production process to ensure the highest quality items are delivered in sufficient quantity at the lowest possible cost in a timely fashion to support the projected quantities of company products.

Job Duties

Scope of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Forecast inventory requirements to facilitate procurement.
  • Utilize Material Requirements Planning system (MRP) to ensure that projected product quantities data is accurate and up to date.
  • Determine and recommend volume purchases of raw materials or product components considering marketplace economics and production process requirements.
  • Negotiate contracts, improve pricing and terms of business with current suppliers and review and recommend opportunities to make materials savings utilizing negotiation and procurement best practice tools and methods.
  • Investigate potential suppliers and interview vendor company representatives. Analyze competitive bids and select vendors for placement on the approved supplier list.
  • Direct or personally conduct vendor negotiations concerning rejected components or supplies, and disposition and adjustment of purchased items not fulfilling specifications.
  • Identify current and potential product shortages, develop and execute internal and external component recovery strategies, advise interested parties of status and recovery plans.
  • Contact suppliers to resolve price, quality, delivery, or invoice issues. Build, maintain and manage supplier relationships and maintain open lines of communications
  • Ensure that a professional and consistent approach is taken in relation to all supplier/vendor relationships
  • Establish and maintain inventory levels and related order points in consideration of procurement lead time, most economical quantities to minimize investment and storage costs, manufacturing requirements, and customer service requirements.
  • Thoroughly review, familiarize and understand existing BOMs and physical products. Monitor the integrity of all products Bill of Materials (BOM) and manage inventory for material accuracy and value.

Skills and Qualifications

  • College degree in Business, Manufacturing Management and/or a minimum of three years’ experience in Materials Management, Inventory Planning, Cost Accounting, or other related fields.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with APICS certification, Certification with The American

Purchasing Society, The American Production and Inventory Control Society, The Next Level PurchasingAssociation, The Universal Public Procurement Certification Council is a plus.

  • Candidate must have working knowledge and understanding of ERP/MRP systems and their uses in a manufacturing environment
  • Candidate must be proficient with Windows Office applications and have excellent knowledge of Excel.
  • Candidate must have strong organizational skills.
  • Must have excellent communication skills with both in-house and external stakeholders and suppliers.
  • Able to manage time effectively, prioritize tasks and achieve set targets
  • Commercial and financial awareness with a full understanding of how material interruption impacts the production, manufacture, and customer order fulfilment
  • Able to work well under pressure and handle emergency and stressful situations
  • Keen attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to leverage metrics and other tools to drive supplier and subordinates’ performance.

Supervisory Responsibility This position has supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment This position is in a manufacturing environment with moderate and occasional loud noise levels, and frequent exposure to airborne particles and moving mechanical parts.

  • Full-time hours required, with additional work hours as necessary to accomplish objectives, goals, projects.

  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
  • Visual abilities required include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
